Orlu offers different ways to experience mountain nature: on the hiking trails of the Réserve d’Orlu, you can explore the high mountains and their wildlife; there are also nature and educational activities, as well as the world of Mountaneô. The options range from hiking and wildlife watching to a forest walk, a museum experience and a wildlife park. When planning, you can first consider whether hiking, nature education or particular animal species should shape your stay.
Hiking and Wildlife Watching
The Réserve d’Orlu covers 4,248 hectares and ranges in elevation from 930 to 2,765 metres. It is a high-mountain protected area and is designated as a national hunting and wildlife reserve. You can watch marmots along its hiking trails; this opportunity is seasonal, and sightings are not guaranteed. One specific viewing spot is Jasse d’en Gaudu, known as a marmot habitat on the trail to Refuge d’En Beys.
At Refuge d’En Beys, you can hike the Tour des Pérics, Tour des montagnes d’Ax and GR7 trails. The ascent through the valley to the refuge takes about three and a half hours. Check local trail conditions before setting out so you can take this estimate into account when planning.
Nature Education and Mountaneô
The Observatoire de la montagne offers wildlife-watching hikes, guided visits and environmental education activities. The nature hikes also include activities in which experts introduce visitors to the mountain environment and its wildlife. The programme is intended for individuals, families, groups and schools. As activities may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
In Orlu, Mountaneô is an interactive museum space about hydroelectric power generation, biodiversity and discovering the mountain environment. The museum area is accessible to people with reduced mobility. The Hydrogame adds an immersive escape game about hydroelectric power: players operate a control centre for several hydroelectric power stations. The Forêt des sons at Mountaneô offers a different focus. This one-kilometre forest walk passes 40 poetic and sound installations.
Wolves in the Spotlight
La Maison des Loups is a wildlife park set in the forest and devoted entirely to wolves. Its spacious enclosures are home to wolf packs from Europe, Canada and the Arctic. This makes a visit different from looking for marmots on the hiking trails of the Réserve: here, the focus is on wolf packs, while there, visitors have the seasonal opportunity to observe wildlife in a mountain setting. The animal collection may change; check the latest information before your visit.
Putting Distance and Hiking Time into Perspective
For planning your time, the forest walk and the ascent to the refuge offer different points of reference: the Forêt des sons is one kilometre long, while the ascent through the valley takes approximately three and a half hours. These are different measures—distance and walking time—and cannot be directly compared. This lets you plan a short walk and a hike lasting several hours as separate parts of your stay. For the hike to the refuge, local trail conditions should be taken into account.
