Niaux offers very different reasons to visit when planning a trip: prehistoric rock art in the Grotte de Niaux, wool processing at the Filature de Niaux, and activities at the Canyon de L’Artigue. These themes offer distinct ways to experience the area: cultural history, traditional processing craft and a supervised activity. Visitors can choose what to focus on in Niaux according to what they would like from their stay.

The Grotte de Niaux: Rock Art and Planning Your Visit

The Grotte de Niaux has been classified as a historic monument since July 13, 1911. Its exceptionally rich prehistoric rock art depicts most of the animal species typical of the prehistoric fauna of the Pyrenees. One specific point of interest is the Salon Noir, reached by a 700-meter path. There, visitors can view depictions of bison, deer, ibex and horses.

The cave can only be visited with a prior reservation and accompanied by a guide. Reservation procedures may change, so check them in advance. The visitor pavilion is at Les Baousses on Route de la Grotte. Reservations and the visitor pavilion are both part of planning your visit.

Wool Processing at the Filature de Niaux

The Filature de Niaux turns attention to another chapter: wool processing. Its machinery carries out every stage of processing, from raw shorn wool to yarn. The know-how behind this wool processing has been passed down since 1867 and is preserved by the Filature. Niaux thus brings together two different eras: prehistoric animal depictions in the cave and knowledge of wool processing passed down since 1867. Organized tours are occasionally available, as are tours for groups. Contact the establishment for reservation information; confirm the arrangements directly with them.

Activities in the Canyon and Cave

The Canyon de L’Artigue offers a water-rich and varied descent with rappels and slides; jumps are optional. The activity is supervised by a professionally qualified instructor holding a state-recognized certification. Check the current activity conditions before making plans, as they may change.

Spéléo Canyon Ariège in Niaux offers another way to explore the cave theme: caving introductions are designed for groups of four to eight participants. This differs from the visit to the rock art in the Grotte de Niaux: the focus here is an introduction to caving, while the cave visit offers a guided look at prehistoric art. Check the current group arrangements in advance, as conditions may change.

Another Point of Interest in the Surrounding Region

Further afield in the region around Niaux, the Parc de la Préhistoire is located in Tarascon. The park offers a life-size facsimile of the Grotte de Niaux. This adds a replica at another location to the cave theme. This makes it possible to view the prehistoric art in the cave and the facsimile in the surrounding region as different perspectives on the same cave theme.
