Carla-Bayle brings together a medieval bastide, art and trails by the lake. The Citadelle du Carla-Bayle is a medieval bastide on a rocky outcrop. You can walk along the ramparts and see picturesque lanes, half-timbered houses and colourful façades. The Citadelle offers a 360-degree panorama with views of the Pyrenees. Visitors to Carla-Bayle can move between architectural details in the town and the expansive views; both perspectives are part of the bastide’s character.

Bastide, Ramparts and Art

The Temple has been listed as a historic monument since 1991. Since 2014, the Église has featured a Stations of the Cross created with works by local artists; the monumental frescoes by Tristan Rà, Clermonde and Shaka were created in 2019. The Parcours de sculptures includes other specifically named works: Nadine Debay’s «Déesse Mère Prototypique» in resin (2010), Suzy Lelièvre’s «Échelle» in anodised steel (2008) and Olivier Ledoux’s «Le Couple» in cedar, chestnut and sequoia wood (2012). The details of the works distinguish the three pieces by artist, material and year, while the Stations of the Cross and frescoes shape the sacred art in the Église. Different artistic forms stand side by side, from frescoes and the Stations of the Cross to sculptures made from different materials.

Art, Biography and the Enlightenment

Since 2002, the Musée Les Amoureux d’Angélique has displayed outsider, naïve and folk art by self-taught, non-professional artists. The galleries in Carla-Bayle showcase painting, sculpture, photography and contemporary art. The range extends from art forms with their own dedicated profile at the museum to the diverse media represented in the galleries. At the Maison Pierre Bayle, visitors can trace Pierre Bayle’s life from his childhood in Carla-Bayle to his exile in Rotterdam. The Musée Pierre Bayle is housed in the philosopher’s birthplace and offers insights into 17th-century history and Enlightenment philosophy. For visitors interested in the history of ideas, these subjects complement the focus on visual art: the emphasis is on Bayle’s life and the philosophy of the Enlightenment.

Lake and Hiking Trails

At the foot of the bastide lies Lac du Carla-Bayle, an 11-hectare lake. A path about two kilometres long circles the lake and can be used for walks all year round. The Tour du Lac is a walking path along the shore: along the way, you can watch birds and regularly hear frogs. For a longer hike, consider La Carlanaise par Cassagne, a 15-kilometre loop starting in Carla-Bayle. It starts and ends at the Gymnase-Salle Polyvalente du Carla-Bayle; check trail conditions before setting out. Comparing the roughly two kilometres around the lake with the 15-kilometre loop can help you choose between a shorter walk and a longer hike.
