In Baudricourt, surviving window features date back to before the 17th century; they are complemented by precisely dated farmhouses and viewpoints in the valley and on the slopes. The village thus combines tangible architectural history with a rural landscape.

Farmhouses, windows and the village centre

The three farmhouses are dated 1687, 1729 and 1864. The dates span more than a century and a half, marking different periods in the history of local architecture. The village also preserves architectural features from before the 17th century: sash windows and a corner window with a trefoil-shaped lintel. Sashes divide a window into individual panes; the lintel forms the top of the opening and is shaped here with three lobes. The dates and window forms offer two distinct ways to explore Baudricourt’s architectural history.

The village centre is Baudricourt’s oldest settlement core. The farmhouses along the road to Mirecourt are more recent and have undergone more alterations. This contrast helps distinguish the old village centre from a younger, more heavily modified layer of the village’s appearance.

Local history and rural heritage

Baudricourt was the seat of a barony, which was elevated to a marquisate in 1719. The village is also considered the home of Victor Hugo’s ancestors. Rural heritage includes farmhouses and workers’ houses. A first washhouse was built in 1826 beside an existing public well. Local history thus encompasses political and family connections as well as examples of rural architecture.

Landscape and natural environment

The “Vergers de Mirecourt” ZNIEFF is a continental type 2 ZNIEFF and also includes Baudricourt. The area covers 9,924.81 hectares and has 58 defining species. These figures for area and species refer to the ZNIEFF as a whole, not to the municipality alone.

At the upper edge of the village is a farm with cattle and large grassy pastures; across the road, sheep graze in orchards. There are viewpoints in the valley and on the slopes. The agricultural surroundings and varied vantage points complement the historical themes with a landscape perspective.

Walks and planning your visit

Near the village centre and along the Cochon, the municipality has set up quiet spots where walkers can enjoy the historic village scenery and landscape. There is currently no signposted circular hiking trail within the municipality; walking routes may change. If you want to include a marked circular route in your stay, check the current walking routes in advance.

Motorsport enthusiasts also have a specific location to consider when planning an overnight stay: the Mirecourt–Juvaincourt international motor racing circuit and karting track are 2.5 km from accommodation in Baudricourt. This adds a distinctly different possible focus for a visit to the architectural and landscape themes.
