Zetting offers different ways to enjoy a stay of discovery: the Église Saint-Marcel tells a story of several construction phases, while walking and cycling options offer distinct experiences. The Le Zettingerwald circular trail is 4 km long; the out-and-back section of the cycling route along the Saar Canal covers 48 km. This makes it easy to balance culture and activity according to your interests.
The architectural history of the Église Saint-Marcel
The Église Saint-Marcel as a whole was classified as a historic monument by decree on 11 June 1891. Its architecture combines Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque styles. The round tower dates from the 11th century, while the church was rebuilt in the 15th century. These distinct dates give the building a layered history.
The choir’s stained-glass windows also contribute to this distinctive art-historical character: they were made in the second quarter of the 15th century by a workshop from the Rhineland. The tower, rebuilding and windows thus point to different aspects of the church, whose history cannot be reduced to a single period.
A two-hour guided tour of the Église Saint-Marcel is led by Gilles Weiskircher, a local historian and specialist in sacred art. It includes discovering the church’s treasures and an explanation of their symbolism. If you would like to include this in-depth interpretation in your stay, check booking availability in advance with Sarreguemines Tourisme.
Walking trails and landscapes
The Zettingerwald forest covers 140 hectares; the Goldbach stream rises there. A named walking trail in Zetting is the Le Zettingerwald circular trail: it is 4 km long, rated moderate and starts at the cemetery on Rue de l'Église. Its length, difficulty and starting point offer practical guidance when choosing a walk. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Le Langenberg is another walking trail. It starts at the car park of the Salle Socio-Culturelle on Rue Principale in Zetting. In addition, some boundary stones along the Circuit des bornes can still be seen today along small paths or beneath a tree. Individual stones may be difficult to find, so keep an eye out for possible trail markers in these places as well.
Cycling along the Saar Canal
The cycling route along the Saar Canal between Sarreguemines and Sarralbe covers a 48 km out-and-back distance. Its canal-side section runs along the banks through Rémelfing, Zetting and Wittring and is fully paved and safe. Check route conditions before setting off.
Two clearly different options are therefore available when choosing an activity: a moderate 4 km circular walking trail and a 48 km out-and-back cycling route. The figures refer to different routes and modes of travel. They help you plan the activity for your stay without treating the walk and the canal ride as one combined route.
