In Woippy, historic paths and buildings, gardens and local produce, as well as leisure activities at Parc du Pâtis and Woippy Plage, offer different reasons to explore. The town’s history takes centre stage on the Sentier Historique; the garden walks and leisure facilities offer a different focus. This lets you choose what to focus on during your stay according to your interests.
Historic paths and buildings
The Sentier Historique explores Woippy’s earlier history at six stops. Markers made of Jaumont stone each display a historical text and an old photograph of the place. The combination of text and photographs offers a written and visual perspective on the town’s history. You can start at any point and walk the trail in either direction; the walk takes around an hour and a half. Guided tours are available on request.
Two buildings also mark different periods in history: Château de Woippy dates from the 13th to 14th century, while Haute Maison is a 15th-century building. Their different dates offer a brief chronological comparison without suggesting that they form a single complex.
The Société d'Histoire de Woippy maintains a historical library in a former music school on Rue de Biche. It is open to everyone interested in history; books can be borrowed by arrangement. The society also holds free lectures. Alongside a walk through the town’s history, visitors can thus explore a historical collection and attend events organised by the history society.
Gardens and strawberry growing
The Sentier n°6 – Les jardins des Chilloux is a walking trail in Woippy where visitors can discover historical and natural highlights. It passes through vegetable gardens, where strawberry growing has helped shape Woippy’s reputation and prosperity. The trail therefore also connects the garden landscape with the town’s history.
The two walking trails have different focuses: the Sentier Historique centres on the town’s earlier history and takes about an hour and a half, while the Sentier n°6 features historical and natural highlights as well as vegetable gardens. This comparison can help you choose a suitable trail based on its theme and the time you have available.
The family-run Potager de Bellevue grows strawberries and asparagus; you can sample the fresh produce directly on site. The crops are grown outdoors using a considered, seasonal approach. Most produce is sold on the day it is harvested. Here, the strawberry is both part of Woippy’s garden history and a local product today.
Leisure at Parc du Pâtis and Woippy Plage
Parc du Pâtis covers 15 hectares. Its enclosures are home to around 30 fallow deer, mouflons and deer. There is also the free Labyrinthe végétal, a maze made up of 500 linear metres of hornbeam hedges.
Woippy Plage was inaugurated in 2011, covers about 20 hectares and is located between Parc de Berlange and Saint-Eloi. It has a free swimming area open to everyone and a 12-hole mini-golf course. You can also go for walks around Woippy Plage. The leisure options are distinct: Parc du Pâtis focuses on animal enclosures and a hedge maze, while Woippy Plage offers swimming, mini-golf and walks.
Woippy’s landscape
Woippy’s landscape includes hillsides and floodplains along the Moselle, as well as ponds, including part of the Étangs de Saint-Rémy. This setting complements the impressions of the gardens and leisure areas, without linking the landscape features to any specific trail.
