Haspelschiedt brings together a village center by the water, a marked circular hiking trail and historic buildings. The Étang de Haspelschiedt is in the center of the small village, surrounded by extensive green forests. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a few days, you can choose how to explore the area based on your interests: time by the water, a longer hike or village history. The activities offer different focuses, leaving you room to plan each day as you wish.

Hiking around Haspelschiedt

The “Remarkable Trees in Haspelschiedt” circular hiking trail is 13.6 km long, rated moderate and takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes. Its length and duration make it a longer hike; the stated difficulty level is another factor to consider when planning. The trail is part of the Pays de Bitche’s “Paths of Excellence” network and is numbered 10. It is marked with a red disc bearing the green “Sentiers d’excellence” badge. The starting point and finish are at the car park at the intersection with Neudoerfel Street, near the laundry. This information comes from route details dated 11 March 2025.

Another route starting in Haspelschiedt is the “Colorado du Bitcherland.” It is described as a technical route and begins in the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park. This gives you two routes with different descriptions: a circular hike with a specified length, duration and difficulty level, and a technical route.

Water, swimming and fishing

Fishing is possible at the Étang de pêche de Haspelschiedt. A half-day permit costs €6 and is sold directly at the pond from a vending machine; weekly and annual permits are available at the campsite reception. The permits therefore differ in both validity period and point of sale. Check the current seasonal information before your visit.

The Étang de Haspelschiedt has a well-equipped inflatable water-play structure for family outings and leisure activities with friends. Swimming is supervised in July and August. The list published by ARS Grand Est in 2025 rates the Étang d’Haspelschiedt bathing water quality as excellent, based on classifications from 2022 to 2024. As bathing water classifications can change, check the current rating before swimming.

Churches and local history

Saint-Nicolas Parish Church was rebuilt from 1869 to 1874 to plans by Desgranges, an architect from Sarreguemines. It was restored from 1947 to 1953, replacing an older chapel in the cemetery. Its features include a basilica-style floor plan, a transept integrated into the building, a polygonal choir termination and a bell tower projecting from the façade. These different architectural elements give architecture enthusiasts specific points of reference for distinguishing the floor plan, choir and façade.

The Chapelle Saint-Wendelin is on Chemin d’Hanviller in Haspelschiedt. It was rebuilt in the third quarter of the 20th century, probably on the site of an older chapel. The wayside cross Croix Keller, locally known as Kreuz Keller, is also part of the village landscape: it stands at the edge of the village’s main road, was erected in 1758 and restored in 1863. The chapel and wayside cross thus provide further historical points of interest alongside the parish church.

The “Wildmannsfeld” polishing stone

The prehistoric polishing stone known as “Wildmannsfeld” is in the forest of Haspelschiedt. It dates from the Neolithic period, between 4000 and 2000 BC, and has hundreds of grooves. The stone collapsed in December 2019. According to route information dated 11 March 2025, it was inaccessible for safety reasons; check access conditions locally before visiting.
