Hanviller offers two distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: the architectural history of the town and a signposted circular walk that also passes through Schorbach and Bitche. The route comes with details on distance, difficulty and duration; the history of the buildings focuses on their chronology. If you are weighing up an architectural-history focus against a hike, these are two different ways to explore: the development of individual buildings and a circular route through several towns. The Ferme du Gendersberg lies outside the small village of Hanviller, in the heart of the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park.
Castle and Church History
The Château de Gentersberg was built in the second quarter of the 18th century for Jean Frédéric Dithmar. It replaced a castle that was mentioned in the 15th century and destroyed in the late 16th or early 17th century. The older castle and the château therefore represent two successive, but clearly separate in time, building phases. The castle history is thus not just the date of a single building, but also includes its earlier predecessor.
The parish church of L'Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix was built after 1787 to replace a chapel that had become too small and dilapidated. The church was destroyed during the war from 1939 to 1945 and completely rebuilt in 1960. The bell tower of the Sainte-Croix church in Hanviller is 27 metres high. In contrast to the château, the church’s history is shaped both by the replacement of an older chapel and by its destruction and subsequent reconstruction.
The two building histories tell of different changes: an older castle was followed by an 18th-century château. For the parish church, the key events are the replacement of a chapel that had become too small and reconstruction after wartime destruction. This comparison offers an overview of different historical periods without reducing Hanviller’s development to a single building.
Circular Walk and Landscape
The route “Autour des cascades et de l'ossuaire de Schorbach” is No. 12 of the Pays de Bitche’s Excellence Trails. It is an easy, 12-kilometre circular walk marked by the Club Vosgien; the stated duration is 3 hours and 30 minutes. When planning your day, you can take distance, time and difficulty into account as separate criteria rather than focusing on distance alone. The route passes through Schorbach, Hanviller and Bitche. This sequence of towns shows that the hike is not limited to Hanviller.
The Neubach waterfall consists of small cascades flowing down from the top of the sandstone cliffs. At the source of the Neubach is a stone-carved watering trough. These two details draw attention to different features: the shape of the cascades and a worked stone object at the spring. In this way, specific landscape features complement Hanviller’s architectural history with a connection to water and sandstone.
