Château-Salins can be explored through several distinct themes: salt history, the Neo-Gothic Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, outdoor trails and a weekly market held on a set day. You can plan your stay around a cultural focus, getting active or a morning at the market. The historical dates and different types of trails answer different planning questions: What can you learn about the town’s development, and what kind of activity suits your interests?

Salt history across several eras

In 1327, Duke Raoul of Lorraine had a fortified castle built in Château-Salins to protect the salt springs. The ducal fortress stood east of today’s Place des Salines and remained largely intact until the beginning of the 19th century. Modern salt production south of Château-Salins resumed in 1894 and was permanently discontinued in 1940. These dates distinguish the medieval fortification from later industrial production. The saltworks in the town center are not open to visitors.

Church and organ

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste is Neo-Gothic and was built between 1868 and 1893. Its organ dates from the 18th century, comes from the Abbaye des Prémontrés de Salival and was fully restored in 1995. The building dates and the organ’s origins represent two different periods in the church’s history. Those interested in architecture will find both a late-19th-century building and an instrument with a much older history here.

Thursday weekly market

Château-Salins’ weekly market takes place on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon at Place de la Saline. Stalls include, among others, a butcher, a greengrocer, honey sellers, poultry and a rotisserie. The mix of stalls may vary. If you would like to include the market in your stay, plan your visit for Thursday morning.

Recreation area and trails

The Aux Salines site has been transformed into an outdoor recreation area. Around its landscaped pond, it offers a range of activities, including mountain biking, tennis and walking. This shared outdoor space offers a choice of both sporty and more relaxed ways to get active.

The “Entre vergers et forêts” circular hiking trail is rated easy for 2026 and passes between the state forest and centuries-old orchards. The “Liaison Château-Salins - zone de loisirs” walking connection links the “Entre les Deux Seilles” and “Entre Vergers et Forêts” circular trails and partly follows the Petite Seille. The routes differ in type: one is a circular hike, while the other connects two separate circular trails. More than 20 kilometers of marked hiking trails are listed in Château-Salins; the starting point is south of town at the Gîte d'étape. Check trail availability and markings locally.
