Discover Laxou’s History and Nature

The historic walk through Laxou Village follows 18 panels along the neighborhood’s streets. They introduce local places, events and people. Along the way, you’ll encounter topics from local history at various stops. If you’re considering Laxou for its history, the walk offers a specific cultural focus for your stay.

CityGem offers another walk, dedicated to nature and cultural heritage. It uses GPS directions, and audio, text and photo content is triggered automatically at points of interest. The two walks present information differently: the historic walk uses panels along the streets, while CityGem uses digital content. If you plan to take this walk, check that the app is available before setting out; its features may change with software updates.

Buildings with Different Stories

The Croix Saint-Claude, also called the Croix des Pestiférés, is Laxou’s oldest monument and dates back to 1586. It was erected after the plague epidemic of 1584 so that people with the plague could attend outdoor celebrations. Its name, age and traditional purpose make the cross a distinctive part of local history.

The Église Saint-Genès also has a long construction history: it is the fifth religious building on this site, and the foundation stone for the present building was laid on July 8, 1877. One architectural feature is the absence of a choir. Instead, a new bay and a wall were built, with the altar placed against it. The former Saint-Paul church tells a different story: built in 1963, it was later converted into Espace Europe, a venue for conferences and performances.

Green Spaces from Park to Protected Forest

The Parc d'agrément du Champ-le-Boeuf was created on the site of a former quarry and covers nine hectares. Its amenities include children’s playgrounds, recreation areas and walking paths. The Forêt domaniale de Haye is on a much larger scale: it covers 6,034 hectares and includes Laxou and six other municipalities. It has been designated a protected forest since 2018.

The Parc du Fond de Lavaux lies on the slopes above the Village and is an official LPO-protected site. Features described there include a partly wooded meadow, an orchard and beehives; a project to create a wetland is also underway. In contrast to the play and recreation areas of the Parc d'agrément du Champ-le-Boeuf, the protected status and varied habitats shape the character of this park. The two green spaces therefore offer different focuses.

Art and Cultural Activities

The open-air art exhibition “En Dehors des Sentiers Battus” was founded in 2003 and designed as a three-year event. During the exhibition series, artists’ works were displayed along paths and in parks, orchards and gardens; there were nearly 100 works in all. The format brings art to different outdoor spaces in Laxou.

The Bibliothèque-Médiathèque Gérard Thirion hosts around ten exhibitions a year and regularly organizes accompanying artist talks and creative workshops. As the annual program may change, check the dates in advance if a particular event is important to your trip.

These highlights give your stay a sense of direction without requiring you to commit to a fixed itinerary.
