Jarny combines architectural heritage with cultural venues and a variety of wetlands. When planning your trip, it is worth exploring the different themes: the Église Saint-Maximin and the Château de Moncel tell the stories of different eras, while the Maison d’Elsa brings together cultural attractions. Parks, ponds and former mining sites offer a distinctive connection with nature and the landscape. This lets you tailor your trip to your own interests.

Church and château: architectural history from different eras

The Église Saint-Maximin brings together architectural elements from several centuries. Its choir dates from the 13th century and is early Gothic; the nave belongs to the late Gothic period of the late 15th century. An extension was added in 1765. Since 1982, the church has been listed in France’s Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. Since its renovation in 2005, guided tours have been held every year during the Heritage Days. If you are planning to join a tour, check the specific dates for your trip.

The Château de Moncel dates from the 12th century and has a drawbridge and moats. In the 19th century, it was transformed into a rectangular manor house in the Lorraine style. Its medieval elements and later architectural form represent different chapters in the history of the town.

Cultural venues and music in town

The Maison d’Elsa is a municipal cultural centre in Jarny, with a media library and a 110-seat theatre. Its programme changes seasonally, so check the current listings if you are looking for a specific date. The Maison d’Elsa is also home to the Micro-Folie. Its four modules include a digital museum, a performance area, a FabLab and a virtual reality area. The range of modules may evolve over time.

Music is also a key part of MuZIKales de Jarny: the festival takes place across the town for a week in June. Almost 30 music groups and ensembles perform in bars, in the square, at the Maison d’Elsa and at the École Municipale de Musique. The programme varies from year to year, so if you are travelling in June, it is worth checking the specific event dates.

Parks, ponds and wetlands

The 17-hectare Parc de Moncel offers several kinds of leisure activities. The grounds include a landscaped arboretum, picnic areas, a fitness trail and ponds for fishing. Woods, ponds and streams also form an ecologically rich continuum within Jarny’s green and blue network. Parc de Moncel is open year-round, and admission is free.

The Marais de Droitaumont offers a different kind of landscape. This wetland was formed by mining subsidence and is designated an Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS). Walking paths cross the grounds at the Carreau de la Mine de Droitaumont, where visitors may spot dragonflies, butterflies, red-backed shrikes and storks. The grounds of the Mine de Droitaumont have also been cleared and landscaped, with a playground, walking paths and a fishing area.

The Petit Étang adds another way to experience these natural sites. The wetland features a walking path, an observation pontoon and a jetty, offering opportunities to observe aquatic wildlife and plants. While Parc de Moncel combines an arboretum with landscaped leisure areas, the Petit Étang focuses on observing aquatic life and experiencing the wetland landscape.

Routes and getting around

The 130-kilometre Metz-Madine loop passes through Jarny. If you are considering adding it to your travel plans, check the latest route details. Gare de Conflans-Jarny station is another useful transport hub: it became a multimodal interchange in 2007, and the town’s cycling plan strengthened this role in 2023. As transport services may change, check connections for your travel dates.
