Morey, one of the five villages in the municipality of Belleau, lies at an elevation of 305 metres on the slopes of the Natagne Valley. Belleau brings together two distinct interests for visitors: architectural and local history in Morey and Manoncourt-sur-Seille, and a forested highland landscape crossed by a tourist walking trail. With its Romanesque church, historic buildings and views across the valley, it offers a clear profile for a stay focused on culture and landscape.

Heritage in Morey and Manoncourt-sur-Seille

The Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Morey is Romanesque and is classified as a historic monument in its entirety. “Romanesque” describes its architectural character, while the classification designates the protected status of the entire church building. The Maison forte also stands in Morey; it was built between the beginning of the 12th century and the middle of the 13th century. Thus, the same village is home to two distinct historical points of interest: a church’s architectural style and the clearly defined construction period of another building.

Château Colin and Château de Morey

Château Colin is located in Manoncourt-sur-Seille, in Belleau. Émile Colin acquired the château; between 1920 and 1924, Georges Biet converted it into a residence. The grand hall has a late Gothic character, a monumental fireplace and rural frescoes on the theme of the four seasons, created by Louis Guingot. The decree of 9 April 1990 placed the grand hall and its vestibule, as well as the façades and roofs that house them, under heritage protection. This protection therefore covers more than just the hall: its vestibule and the façades and roofs that house both were also included.

Château de Morey is distinct from Château Colin. The village of Morey lies at an elevation of 305 metres on the slopes of the Natagne Valley and offers panoramic views. The surviving gate was classified as a historic monument by decree of 13 August 1930. Morey’s panoramic setting and the protected status of the surviving gate refer to different aspects of the place.

Forest, highlands and valley views

A tourist walking trail in Belleau runs through the Buzion Forest and over the municipality’s highlands, offering views of the Natagne Valley. The forest consists mainly of oak, beech and hornbeam. This combination of forest, high ground and valley views gives the trail a different focus from the individual buildings: here, the landscape and tree species shape the experience, while the monuments are defined by their architecture, features and protected status. The walking trail begins and ends at the telephone booth in Belleau, providing a specifically named starting and ending point. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
