Fuilla lies in the apple-growing valley through which the La Rotja River flows, and is one of the 66 municipalities in the Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Catalanes. Several distinct themes shape the area for trip planning: Romanesque architecture and historic landmarks, the Festival musique et nature de la vallée de la Rotja, and trails and paths in the area. This offers a choice of different priorities: culture, an annual festival date, and time outdoors.
Churches and landmarks from different periods
The Church of Sainte Eulalie was consecrated in 1031 and is a well-preserved example of 11th-century Romanesque architecture. It was listed as a historic monument in 1965. These two details mark different points in its history: its consecration and its later listing. Visits are possible by prior appointment; confirm access details before you arrive.
The Saint Jean-Baptiste Chapel was first mentioned in 1198 and houses the 14th-century marble sarcophagus of Jaubert de Fuilla. The sarcophagus was listed as a historic monument in 1903. Different historical reference points take centre stage here than at Sainte Eulalie: the chapel’s first mention and a medieval sarcophagus, rather than an 11th-century consecration.
Sainte Eulalie also contains wooden statues from the 15th century that were found almost completely intact and nearly undamaged. The recumbent Christ is in poorer condition. The building, its artworks and their varying states of preservation add another facet to the area’s cultural heritage.
A festival of music, nature and culture
The Festival musique et nature de la vallée de la Rotja takes place every year during the first week of August. It includes concerts and workshops on nature and culture; local producers also take part. If you are travelling specifically for the festival, check the dates for the relevant festival year before booking. The festival provides an annual date to plan around; visits to Sainte Eulalie, on the other hand, should be arranged by prior appointment.
Trails, local produce and accommodation
The Fuilla area has hundreds of kilometres of trails and paths. If you want to include time outdoors on the trails in your stay, choose a route for your plans and schedule your time around it. This lets you focus on the trail network alongside visiting historic sites or planning around the festival.
Mas Guiter makes cheese and dairy products directly on the farm. If you want to include these products in your plans, check sales and availability before you arrive. This is a practical planning consideration, distinct from arranging a church visit or planning around the festival.
Le Rotja campsite has a swimming pool with a paddling pool, a playground, table tennis tables and a library. The facilities cater to different interests: swimming and paddling, playing, table tennis and reading. As facilities may change, confirm that the listed amenities are available before booking.
