Montesquieu-Des-Albères combines hiking trails with Romanesque heritage. The village lies at an altitude of 160 m at the foot of the Albères Massif and a few kilometres from the Mediterranean. When planning your trip, different interests may take priority: would you like to explore architectural history, plan a circular walk or choose a climb with a significant elevation gain? The routes vary in format and elevation profile.

Château and Romanesque Church

The Château de Montesquieu-des-Albères was first documented in 1080. It was built by the lords of Sant Cristau, who later adopted the name Montesquieu. The year refers to the castle’s first recorded mention. The history of the building is therefore a point of interest in its own right if you want to make culture the focus of your stay.

Saint-Saturnin is a Romanesque church documented since the 12th century. The Bishop of Elne consecrated it in 1123. Its architecture includes a three-bay nave and a choir with a semicircular apse. Since 3 April 1984, Saint-Saturnin has been listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. Its architectural form and dates provide specific historical points of interest for your visit.

Circular Walk to the Jardins de Marti Fort or Climb to the Casot

The Jardins de Marti Fort are located 1 km south of the village. From the village, they can be reached on foot via the rural path “de Montesquieu à la Glaude”; the route is signposted with yellow PR waymarks. The hike is an approximately two-hour circular walk with around 48 m of elevation gain. Check signage and access conditions locally.

The gardens are connected with the water management system developed in Montesquieu-des-Albères in the 11th and 12th centuries. As part of this, gardens and pastures were established along the “Route de l’eau.” A visit to the Jardins de Marti Fort therefore combines a walk with a glimpse into the historical importance of water management in the municipality.

The climb to the Casot del Soldat takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, involves 450 m of elevation gain and follows a DFCI track described as easy. At the Casot, there is a far-reaching viewpoint over Mas Freixe and Pic Estelle, as well as a picnic table, a fountain and a shelter. Weather, fire-prevention restrictions or maintenance work may affect the facilities. Check local information about the trail and access before setting out.

When planning your time, it helps to distinguish between the details: the Jardins route is described as a circular walk, while the Casot route is a climb. The elevation gains also differ considerably. So compare more than just the duration; take the format of each route and its elevation profile into account.

More Trails and Activities

The Parc des Anglades is a free multisport facility and is open daily throughout the year. Check local information before your visit. Local paths pass springs and fountains, and walks offer panoramic views. Alongside the named hikes, visitors can therefore choose between shorter walks and a sports facility to help them find their bearings in the area.

Le tour de Montesquieu connects the village with the hamlets of Les Trompettes Hautes and Les Agouillous. The route’s varied landscape includes ruins, farmhouses, a viewpoint, the Tech River and a mill. The Boucle des Albères leads to Place de l’Houm in the heights above the village. Climbing to the bell tower provides access to a viewpoint there. Trail conditions and access may change on this route; check local information before your visit.
