Cultural heritage and two hiking trails with distinct profiles shape the way Le Collet-De-Dèze is experienced. The Temple du Collet-de-Dèze has a history dating back to the start of construction in 1646 and opens seasonally; for hiking, you can choose between a very easy educational trail through the historic centre and a moderately difficult forest loop. Two specific questions can help with your planning: Should the temple’s opening schedule determine when you visit, or is the duration of a trail your main consideration?

A temple with two historical dates

Construction of the Temple du Collet-de-Dèze began in 1646. By decree of 13 September 1984, the temple was listed as a historic monument. The dates mark two different milestones: 1646 marks the start of construction, while 1984 marks its subsequent listing. Those interested in religious buildings and their cultural heritage will find a specific point of historical interest here. The two dates also help distinguish the building’s history from its heritage status, rather than treating them as a single event.

In July and August, the Temple opens its doors thanks to volunteers from the local parish. This seasonal opening is important for planning your visit: if you would like the temple visit to be a highlight of your stay, plan your visit during this period and confirm the opening arrangements beforehand. This ensures that your visit falls within the stated season.

Two hiking trails with distinct profiles

The Sentier du vieux Collet passes through the historic centre of Le Collet-de-Dèze and between old Cévenol houses. It is a very easy educational trail, 1.9715 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 1 hour 30 minutes. The trail includes eleven numbered information panels. Its combination of the town centre, old houses and educational trail makes it the shorter of the two hikes described; its length and duration also give you a concrete basis for planning your day.

Tignac, entre châtaigniers et pins has a different profile: it is a moderately difficult, 6.7-kilometre circular hike with a duration of 2 hours 30 minutes. It passes through a forest characterised by chestnut trees and maritime pines. The loop starts and ends at the car park by the Temple in Le Collet-de-Dèze. Both its circular route and its starting and ending point are clearly stated.

There is a one-hour difference between the stated walking times. But the difference is not just in duration: the Sentier du vieux Collet is described as a very easy educational trail in the historic centre, while Tignac is a moderately difficult loop through the forest. If you prefer the shorter time, the Sentier is the suitable option; for a longer loop, Tignac offers an alternative. The landscapes also have different emphases: old Cévenol houses and numbered panels on one hand, chestnut trees and maritime pines on the other. This lets you choose according to your available time and the character of the trail, without treating the two routes as parts of a single hike.
