Sougraigne offers several ways to explore a distinctive blend of geology, forest and history. At the source of the Sals, you can discover the water’s unusual salinity; at the Domaine de l’Eau Salée, historic remains and signposted trails complement the natural features. When planning your visit, it makes a difference whether you prefer to explore independently with a map, follow the “Entre sel et verre” route or choose a guided tour that requires advance booking. Each option has a different focus, so you can choose according to your interest in landscapes, walking and historical interpretation.

The Sals spring

At its source, the Sals contains up to 60 grams of sodium chloride per litre—about twice as much as seawater. The spring is considered a geological curiosity and can be discovered on a hike from Sougraigne. This combines a specific natural feature with an independent hike: you can make the spring the focus of an outing instead of getting to know the region only through its historic sites. The unusual concentration gives the place a distinct geological theme, different from the history of the Domaine and the trails through its forest.

The Domaine de l’Eau Salée: Landscape and History

The Domaine de l’Eau Salée overlooks the Sals valley, covers 600 hectares and is managed by the French National Forestry Office (Office National des Forêts). The estate was built shortly after the middle of the 17th century. The ruins of the Métairie de la Fontaine Salée and the former Gabelous barracks have been preserved there. These named remains make the historic estate tangible at specific locations and add a place to visit in the valley beyond the spring’s geological features.

Forest trails and navigation

The “Entre sel et verre” discovery route runs through the heart of the Domaine de l’Eau Salée forest. Information stations explain different aspects of regional history; the route also features interpretive panels and picnic areas. It therefore combines a continuous walk through the forest with historical interpretation and places to take a break. If you prefer to navigate independently with a map, the permanent orienteering course offers a different format: it lets you find your way on your own and discover local history using wooden markers on the grounds.

The orienteering map is at a scale of 1:5,000 and is available from the tourist office in Rennes-les-Bains. If you need it for your plans, confirm that a copy is available shortly before your trip. The “Entre sel et verre” route is considered accessible to people with intellectual disabilities and people with hearing impairments. If this information is essential to your plans, confirm the arrangements before travelling. The main difference between the routes is their focus: the orienteering course centres on independent navigation, while the discovery route brings together information along the way.

Guided tours and the Marche du Sel

A guided tour of the Sals spring and the glass furnaces is scheduled to run year-round in 2026. It lasts about two and a half hours and requires advance booking. Check the dates beforehand before planning the tour as part of your itinerary. Unlike exploring independently with a map, this is a booked visit with a set duration.

Each year, the Association Salicorne organises the guided Marche du Sel hike, following in the footsteps of former salt smugglers. The 21st edition took place in 2026. The historical theme is combined with a hike, making the Marche du Sel another option for travellers who want to connect walking with the history of the salt trade.

The restored former Verrerie is open to hikers. If you want to include it in your overnight plans, confirm the arrangements beforehand. This lets you weigh up independent hikes, the circular route, orienteering and the guided tour according to their different formats, without having to combine them into a single outing.
