Quintillan combines guided hiking activities with several natural settings: vineyard landscapes, river areas and woodland. There is also the Église Sainte-Madeleine, a heritage site. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between the options: guided walks and hikes are the focus at Asinerie Quintill’Ane, while Le Col de Mairolles is a circular route with a stated distance and average duration. You can start by asking yourself whether a guided tour, a circular walk or the heritage site should shape your stay most.

Nature between the Corbières and river landscapes

The entire municipality of Quintillan lies within the Parc naturel régional Corbières-Fenouillèdes. The decree of 4 September 2021 established the park’s classification for fifteen years. In addition, the Natura 2000 site ZPS Corbières orientales extends only partly into Quintillan. It is the bird protection area FR9112008 and was designated by ministerial decree on 6 April 2006. The geographical coverage therefore differs: the regional park includes the entire municipality, while the bird protection area covers only part of it.

The ZNIEFF “Cours amont de la rivière de la Berre” provides another way to understand the area. It is located in the southeast of the Aude department and includes Quintillan. Nearly 30 kilometres of the Berre river course through the eastern Corbières are part of this area. Its landscape features include wetlands along the banks, riparian forests and meadows alongside the waterways. In the Quintillan area, wooded areas also belong to the Natura 2000 site ZPS Corbières orientales. Riverbanks, meadows and wooded areas thus provide different points of reference for understanding the nature around Quintillan.

Hikes with different planning requirements

Asinerie Quintill’Ane offers guided walks and hikes along stone paths and through Quintillan’s vineyard landscape. Its routes lead to the state forest of Quintillan and to a natural pool. They follow mule tracks lined with Mediterranean vegetation. This includes juniper, strawberry trees and thyme, as well as other plants. The route description therefore brings together several specific landscape features: stone paths, mule tracks, vineyards and the state forest. The guided activities require advance planning: the Asinerie is open year-round in suitable weather, by appointment. The appointment must be made at least two days in advance.

Le Col de Mairolles is a circular hiking route in the municipality of Quintillan. The route is approximately 5.9 kilometres long, with an average duration of around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Along the way, there are open views of the Corbières, the surrounding plain and the village of Quintillan. The two types of hike therefore also differ in the planning information available: at the Asinerie, a guided tour requires an advance appointment; for Le Col de Mairolles, the approximate distance and duration help you estimate the time needed for the circular walk. You can take these differences into account when choosing an activity, without treating the two options as equivalent.

Église Sainte-Madeleine and heritage

The Église Sainte-Madeleine is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene and reflects Quintillan’s religious and spiritual history. It is listed as a heritage site in Quintillan. This gives your stay a cultural connection to the municipality alongside its natural and hiking attractions. The dedication and heritage designation name two aspects of the same church: its religious significance and its place in the local heritage.
