Heritage, Landscape and Wine
The rural commune of Pépieux is characterised by unspoilt nature and Mediterranean landscapes. Highlights for visitors include the Dolmen des Fades, with its prehistoric construction phases; the Église Saint-Étienne, a 14th-century church; an easy circular route; and winegrowing at Château Massamier La Mignarde. You can therefore tailor your stay to your interests: megalithic architecture, religious buildings, exercise or wine.
The Dolmen des Fades
The Dolmen des Fades is located at Mourel de la fados, within the commune of Pépieux. Its megalithic gallery is 24 metres long and lies within a tumulus approximately 35 metres long. The dolmen includes construction phases from the Chalcolithic and Bronze Ages. Its dimensions and periods offer two points of focus: the structure’s form and its chronology. The dolmen is accessible via walking trails and is well suited to a walk in nature. This combines an interest in a prehistoric structure with some exercise outdoors.
The Église Saint-Étienne and the Chapel on the Plô
The Église Saint-Étienne was built in a single construction phase in the 14th century, following the Languedoc style. Its very wide single-nave body is complemented by chapels between the buttresses. The choir is vaulted; the apsidioles are also vaulted and open onto the nave. The term “single-nave” refers to a single main space and helps distinguish the church from those with several naves. The Église Saint-Étienne has been classified as a historic monument since 1927.
The former seigneurial chapel on the Plô was also listed in its entirety as a historic monument, on 19 March 1942. This date refers to its listing, not to a construction phase. By comparison, the 14th century for the Église Saint-Étienne refers to its construction; the building period and the monument listing are therefore different points in time.
Vineyard Tour and Tasting
Château Massamier La Mignarde offers guided vineyard tours with the winemaker. The tour explains the soil, climate and cultivation techniques. For anyone interested in how grapes are grown, these are the main topics; the experience also includes a tasting of the estate’s wines in a historic 18th-century cellar building. The estate also sells its own jams, grape juice and olive oil. The tour and tasting offer different points of focus: the conditions for winegrowing on the one hand, and the estate’s wines on the other.
The Chemin des vignes de Pépieux
The Chemin des vignes de Pépieux is a very easy, four-kilometre circular route. It can be done on foot or by bike and is also suitable for children. Its length and circular layout make it easy to plan. Unlike the Dolmen des Fades, this option focuses on a specific route; at the dolmen, the megalithic gallery and prehistoric construction phases shape the visit. You can choose between an easy circuit and a focus on cultural history.
