Versailles combines the history of a royal residence with museums, gardens and cultural programmes. Three railway stations serve Versailles; specific access information is important when planning your trip.

Château, Gallery and Paths through the Park

The Château and Park of Versailles are considered a perfect model of a royal residence. The Galerie des Glaces is described as a masterpiece of the Louis XIV style. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Château and Park were turned into a museum. This means that courtly representation, architecture and the later history of the museum all come together in Versailles.

A walk through the gardens leads to selected viewpoints, bosquets and pools, and explains the design concept and symbolism of Le Nôtre. The Trianon Estate can be reached from the Château on foot through the gardens and park in about 30 minutes. If you would like to visit both areas, allow for this walking time as an estimate and check current access information and path conditions before your visit.

City History and Special Collections

The Musée Lambinet focuses on the history of the city of Versailles, particularly the French Revolution. The Salle du Jeu de Paume also tells the story of this period: it was converted into a museum of the French Revolution, which opened on 20 June 1883. The two sites thus offer different ways to explore the history of the city and the Revolution.

Other collections have their own distinct focus. The Galerie des Sculptures et des Moulages presents casts of ancient works. The Galerie des Carrosses displays ceremonial state carriages, not vehicles for travel. The Cathédrale Saint-Louis has been classified as a Monument historique since 1906 and is considered a masterpiece of French Baroque architecture. The Théâtre Montansier is one of the oldest Italian-style theatres in France. Together, these sites offer different perspectives on the art, architecture and cultural heritage of Versailles.

Garden Culture and Markets

The Potager du Roi is a nine-hectare garden protected as a historic monument. It was built between 1678 and 1683 on the orders of Louis XIV and preserves a collection of more than 750 old and modern varieties of fruit and vegetables. Here, you can explore garden culture through both the historic layout and the variety of the collection.

From April to October, guided tours, public gardening workshops and short courses are offered at the Potager du Roi every weekend. Tours are conducted exclusively in French; dates and offerings may change. The markets also add to the city’s character: the Marché Saint-Louis is a unique feature of urban planning in France. The Marché Notre-Dame comprises covered market halls, open from Tuesday to Sunday, as well as open-air market squares. Organic producers and food vendors gather there every week. Check current market days and offerings before your visit.

Plan Performances and Your Journey

The Château de Versailles offers opera, concerts, theatre and ballet, including at the Opéra Royal and the Chapelle Royale. As programmes change, it is worth checking the latest dates. The Académie équestre de Versailles offers another blend of tradition and contemporary design: since 2003, it has been based in the heart of the Château’s Grande Écurie. At weekends, it performs its repertory piece “La Voie de l’écuyère”; afterwards, the stables can be visited freely. Performance dates may change here, too.

For rail travel, Versailles is served by the stations Versailles Château Rive Gauche, Versailles Rive Droite and Versailles Chantiers. Check the latest official information about access and connections before your trip. When choosing accommodation, you can then use your specific travel arrangements and the places you plan to visit as practical guides—without needing to follow a set itinerary.
