Le Perray-En-Yvelines combines a significant pond landscape with traces of architectural and cultural history. The Étangs de Hollande represent both a historic water-management project and an important area for birdlife. There is also a birdwatching spot, a station-to-station hike and cultural activities at the Médiathèque. When choosing a destination, you can consider whether nature watching or historical landmarks should play a greater role in your stay.
Pond Landscape and Birdlife
The Chaîne des Étangs de Hollande consists of six interconnected ponds: the Étang de Saint-Hubert, the Étang de Pourras, the Étang de Corbet, the Étang de Bourgneuf and the two Étangs de Hollande. It was created in the 17th century to supply the basins at the Palace of Versailles. Today, the area is also important for bird conservation: numerous bird species nest in its extensive reed beds.
The Réserve naturelle nationale des étangs et rigoles d’Yveline is located in Le Perray-En-Yvelines, in the area of the Étangs de Hollande. Migratory birds visit the ponds in spring and autumn; several duck species use them for overwintering. The seasons therefore offer different opportunities for observation. The dam between the Étang de Pourras and the Étang de Corbet is a good spot for birdwatching.
Historic Structures and Their Traces Through Time
The Pavillon de Pourras was completed in 1808 and partially restored; its gabled façades are still visible. The Pont Napoléon was built between the Étang de Pourras and the Étang de Saint-Hubert for Louis XVI. At the Croix Saint-Jacques, a connection to the “chemin de Saint Jacques de Compostelle” meets an obelisk shape that was preserved under Louis XV.
The present-day parish church of Saint-Eloi also has its own architectural history: it may date from the second half of the 13th century, but it has been extensively remodelled. Its bell tower was restored in 1779. At this building, the possible origin and the specific year of restoration should be clearly distinguished.
Hiking and Cultural Activities
The “Du Perray à Rambouillet par les étangs, les rigoles et la Drouette” station-to-station hike offers another perspective on the landscape. It passes through the Parc Naturel de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse and the Forêt de Rambouillet. The route mostly follows shaded terrain along ponds, small canals and the Drouette River. As trail conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out.
For local cultural activities, the Médiathèque offers books, comics, DVDs and audiobooks. Municipal information published in 2025 lists a total of 30,000 items. People who do not live in Le Perray-En-Yvelines can also use the Médiathèque and borrow items, provided they have a valid membership; check the current membership rules in advance. Its varied free programme includes story times, activities for young children, meet-and-greets, book signings and performances. Individual events may change.
