For a trip to Marly-Le-Roi, you can plan a blend of nature and history with different focuses. The Marly Forest makes its mark on the landscape with its ponds and trails. The Musée du Domaine royal de Marly conveys the history of the Château de Marly and the Machine de Marly; the Church of Saint-Vigor and medieval cultural offerings add to the mix. This gives you several specific themes to choose from: wildlife and activity in the forest, royal history at the museum, and ecclesiastical and medieval heritage.
Marly Forest: Ponds and Trails
The Marly Forest contains around fifty ponds, which are of particular interest for wildlife. There are trails for walkers and joggers, as well as routes for mountain bikers, horse-riding trails and a fitness trail. Alongside the ponds’ natural appeal, activity is another focus. The options vary in the type of activity, so when planning, you can distinguish, for example, between walking and jogging and mountain biking, horse riding or using the fitness trail.
Château History at the Musée du Domaine royal de Marly
The Musée du Domaine royal de Marly has been a Musée de France since September 17, 2003. It tells the story of the Château de Marly, which Louis XIV had built and which was destroyed in the early 19th century. The museum also covers the Machine de Marly, which supplied the château’s fountains. The museum’s topics therefore include both the history of the château and the water supply for its fountains.
Guided tours are offered for individual visitors, adult groups and school groups. Check the dates before your visit, as tour times may change. Another visitor experience is the virtual reality experience «L’Eclipse royale». Check whether it is currently available before you travel.
Church of Saint-Vigor: Two Historical Dates
The Church of Saint-Vigor was built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1688. Its Ave Maria bell is older: it dates from 1473 and came from the Prieuré Saint-Étienne. Comparing the two dates distinguishes the building’s history from the bell’s origins and gives your visit a specific chronological reference.
Cultural Trail and Square Georges Michel
The QR-code cultural trail in Marly-Le-Roi features 18 works and is intended for residents and non-residents alike. You can explore it on foot, by bicycle or by scooter; heritage information panels are located along the route. Unlike a museum tour, the trail is another cultural offering with several explicitly stated ways to get around.
Square Georges Michel offers a cultural and historical tour through the medieval history of Marly-Le-Roi. At the same time, the square preserves the oldest remains in the municipal area: the remains of the Prieuré Saint-Étienne de Marly-le-Bourg, built on this site in the 12th century. Playful activities for younger visitors add to the presentation of medieval Marly. This focus differs from the history of the Château and the Machine de Marly at the museum: here, the emphasis is on medieval traces in the municipal area.
