Clairefontaine-En-Yvelines lies in a clearing in the heart of the Rambouillet Forest. When choosing a trip, there are two clear highlights: trails through a varied landscape and historic points of interest in the village. Hiking trails include routes marked in blue and white; specific walking times are also given for some of them. The church and chapel add architectural and local history. Visits to the châteaux require a permit.

Landscape between the valley floor and sandy slopes

The landscape includes marshes, reed beds and wet meadows on the valley floor. The sandy slopes are home to heathland and chestnut groves. The wet lowlands and sandy slopes offer contrasting scenery: visitors particularly interested in wetlands can look out for marshes, reeds and meadows, while heathland and chestnut groves offer a different focus. So the surroundings offer more than a generic woodland setting and give the village’s position in the clearing a distinctive landscape.

Hiking trails and walking times

“Paysage d'eau et de sable à Clairefontaine” is a hiking trail marked in blue and white by the Parc naturel régional de la Fontaine Réale. An information board at the starting point describes the trail and its points of interest. The route is also checked regularly by a technician responsible for sustainable mobility at the Parc naturel régional.

“La Marlotterie, entre landes et roselières” is also marked in blue and white and is a hiking trail in the Parc naturel régional. This route is approximately 5.9 kilometres long and has an average walking time of two hours. “La petite balade en forêt” is the Parc naturel régional’s “des Grands Bois” circular trail. This trail is also marked in blue and white and is checked regularly by a technician responsible for sustainable mobility at the park.

“Clairefontaine et ses sous bois” is described as very easy and has a walking time of 2 hours and 46 minutes. Compared with the average walking time for the Marlotterie route, the two times differ by 46 minutes. The longer time is therefore for the route rated very easy; time and difficulty describe different aspects of choosing a trail. The Étang de Vilgris is a good place to take a break.

Church, chapel and châteaux

The Saint-Nicolas Church was built in the Romanesque-Byzantine style and consecrated on 21 September 1902. Its consecration date and named architectural style are two specific links to local history; the church is dedicated to Saint Nicolas. The Chapelle de Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines has been awarded the “Patrimoine d’intérêt régional” label by the Île-de-France region. Alongside the church’s dated history, the chapel’s regional award offers a distinct point of interest.

The châteaux of Clairefontaine-En-Yvelines can be visited with a permit. Check the permit requirements before planning a visit so you can take this condition into account.

Getting around the village centre

Free parking is available in the village centre along the Rabette, behind the church and near the André Moutier community hall. As parking arrangements may change, check the current situation before travelling.
