Arcueil brings together a Gallo-Roman structure, medieval church architecture and a varied cultural programme. Visitors planning a stay can choose from different interests: architectural history, contemporary art or changing performance and cultural events. The historical building phases and the variety of events provide several specific points of reference.

History and Architecture in Arcueil

The Gallo-Roman aqueduct of Arcueil was rebuilt between 1613 and 1623 under the regency of Marie de’ Medici, the mother of Louis XIII. These dates refer to this rebuilding phase; they should not be confused with the structure’s Gallo-Roman origins. Its history therefore brings together an earlier Roman classification and a clearly dated 17th-century building phase.

The Église Saint-Denys was built largely in the first half of the 13th century. The choir is dated to around 1220 to 1230, and the nave to approximately 1240 to 1250. These approximate periods distinguish the building phases within the church. The Église Saint-Denys may also have served as a model for the construction of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral—a historical interpretation phrased with appropriate caution.

Another link to the town’s history is the Maison des Gardes: it is the last surviving remnant of the 17th-century rule of the Princes of Lorraine. Together with the church and the aqueduct, it offers not just a single historical period, but a selection of different building and heritage stories.

Cultural Offerings for Different Interests

Anis Gras – Le Lieu de l’Autre offers theatre, dance and music, as well as visual arts, painting, photography and cinema. Its wide-ranging profile brings together performance formats, visual arts and film. Individual events change, so the programme for the dates of your visit is the key thing to check when planning.

The municipal Julio Gonzalez Gallery has held contemporary art exhibitions since 1992. Art history talks are also offered throughout the year. Some are linked to the exhibitions and take the form of guided tours. Art lovers can therefore find both exhibitions and events that place individual themes in their art-historical context.

The Espace Jean Vilar also offers a wide-ranging programme throughout the year, including film screenings, concerts, festivals and conferences, as well as performances of theatre, dance, circus, storytelling and puppetry. The programme is seasonal and may change, so please check specific dates in advance.

The Médiathèque Louis Pergaud regularly adds public events to the programme. These include storytelling sessions, exhibitions, concerts, author events, performances, reading clubs and literary prizes. Here too, the specific programme changes over time. The venues therefore differ primarily in their formats, from exhibitions and art history talks to film, performing arts and literary events.

Getting There and Planning Your Visit

From Paris, Arcueil can be reached on the RER B towards Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse. Get off at Laplace or Arcueil-Cachan. Check the current service status and connection before travelling.

When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between the enduring historical themes and the changing events programme. The aqueduct, church architecture and Maison des Gardes offer historical points of reference, while exhibitions, talks and performances provide other cultural highlights. This lets you choose the focus of your stay in Arcueil based on its architectural history or current programme, without trying to fit everything into a fixed itinerary.
