The Axe Majeur gives Cergy a striking focal point for landscape art. Water and green spaces, walking routes and historical themes offer further ways to shape a stay.
Landscape Art and Cultural History
The Axe Majeur is a public landscape artwork more than three kilometres long. Dani Karavan created the route with twelve stations; the artwork can be visited free of charge all year round. Its twelve stations make the route a starting point if you would like to include art in the landscape in your travel plans.
The Axe Majeur received the “Patrimoine d’intérêt régional” label in 2020 and the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” label in 2022. The Maison Anne et Gérard Philipe in Cergy received the regional cultural label in 2021. The same distinction therefore applies to two different places, while the Axe Majeur also received recognition for contemporary architecture.
Water, Routes and Marina
In the heart of Cergy-Pontoise, the ĂŽle de loisirs de Cergy-Pontoise covers 250 hectares of water and green spaces and is open all year round. Attractions include a sandy beach with large slides, as well as rafting, surfing, water skiing, high ropes courses, pedal boating and kayaking. The individual activities are seasonal, even though the ĂŽle de loisirs is open all year round.
Different route lengths and destinations are available. The 5 km circular route passes through nature and is connected to the Axe Majeur by a footbridge. The 12 km Bords d’Oise walking route leads to Cergy-Village, where you can discover the Église Saint-Christophe. Details of the walking route may change, so check the route information before setting out.
The Port Cergy marina adds a harbour perspective to the waterside experience: it has 60 berths for boats 5 to 22 metres long.
Culture, Festival and Early Settlement
“Cergy, Soit!” is an international street arts and circus festival founded in 1998. Its focus differs from the landscape art of the Axe Majeur and offers another cultural event to consider when planning your trip.
Another historical landmark is the stone in Cergy known as the Palet de Gargantua. It is 3.7 metres high and visible from the road. It is associated with Cergy’s Neolithic settlement, dating from between 5000 and 2500 BC.
Travel Period and Accommodation
The difference between year-round art visits and seasonal activities is useful when choosing when to travel: the Axe Majeur can be visited free of charge all year round, while the individual activities at the Île de loisirs are seasonal. If water sports or “Cergy, Soit!” will shape your stay, check availability or the specific event dates before looking for a hotel for that period.
