Chailly-En-Bière brings together traces of art and architectural history with activities that offer a different focus for your stay. At the church, protected heritage status and a connection to Jean-François Millet’s “L’Angélus” come together; the Ferme de la Fromagerie adds an architectural history dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Geocaching, a viewpoint equipped for picnics, and pick-your-own red berries and apples offer other ways to spend your time. You can choose your focus according to whether you would rather explore art and local history or enjoy an outdoor activity.

Art and Architectural History

The church in Chailly-En-Bière has been listed as a historic monument (“Monument historique”) since 18 March 1926. The church is depicted in the background of Jean-François Millet’s painting “L’Angélus.” This connects a specific artistic motif with a protected historic building. The Église Saint-Paul also has a detail with a precise date: its bell, known as the Angelus bell, was consecrated on 29 May 1823. The painting and the consecration date offer different points of interest—one focuses on the connection to visual art, the other on a precisely dated object.

Further artistic connections can be found in the cemetery and at the Auberge du Cheval Blanc. The graves of Jean-François Millet and Théodore Rousseau lie side by side in the cemetery of Chailly-En-Bière. The inn, meanwhile, was regularly visited by painters from the Barbizon School during the last century. These reveal two different kinds of historical connection to artists: the graves’ immediate proximity and the painters’ visits to the inn.

The Ferme de la Fromagerie dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The construction of the Grange des dîmes marks the farm’s origins around 1440. A specific founding event thus coincides with a broader time frame for the estate. For a stay focused on architectural history, this adds a distinct historical perspective to the artistic connections around the church, cemetery and inn.

The artistic heritage trail offers another way to explore the village’s history. The programme for Heritage Day on 20 September 2026 lists 16 notable sites in the village along the trail.

Geocaching, Picnics and Pick-Your-Own

The permanent activity “Géocaching – A vous de jouer!” is offered by the Parc naturel régional du Gâtinais français and the municipality of Chailly-En-Bière. It combines puzzles in geocaches with GPS coordinates, which help you locate the caches. Geocaching focuses on solving puzzles and searching, while the heritage trail draws attention to artistic and historic places in the village. A geocaching route leaflet is available at the town hall; check the local edition before your visit.

For a picnic, the ONF has equipped the Point de vue du Camp viewpoint with tables and stone benches. If you plan to stop there, check the conditions for using the picnic facilities on site. La Ferme Chaillotine offers another activity: visitors can pick their own red berries and apples in Chailly-En-Bière.

The options differ mainly in what you do at each location: geocaching involves solving puzzles and using coordinates; the Point de vue du Camp is equipped for picnics, while La Ferme Chaillotine offers pick-your-own fruit. If you prefer art and local history, there are several distinct themes to explore—from the church and its connection to Millet to the architectural history of the Ferme de la Fromagerie.
