The two walking routes offer different highlights: Amillis-Pisseloup leads to the Notre-Dame Grotto; Les anciens étangs d’Amillis runs in a bend of the Aubetin and overlooks Amillis. Other highlights include the Église Saint-Pierre et Sainte-Flodoberthe and the characteristic landscapes of the Aubetin Valley. This makes it easy to plan a stay around hiking, culture and nature.
Walking routes and outdoor trails
The Amillis-Pisseloup walking route is 14.6 km long, follows a circular route through Amillis and starts at the town hall car park. The climb involves 126 metres of elevation gain. The route leads to the Notre-Dame Grotto, which lies south of Amillis on the heights of the Aubetin Valley. When choosing this route, you can take both the distance and elevation gain into account when planning; the grotto is a clearly identified destination.
The second walking route, Les anciens étangs d’Amillis, is 15 km long, classified as moderate and also starts at the town hall car park. It runs in a bend of the Aubetin and overlooks Amillis. The former ponds recalled in its name have disappeared; the hollows in the valley are now used as pasture or arable land. At 15 km rather than 14.6 km, the routes differ little in length. Their highlights, however, are different: the Notre-Dame Grotto on one route, views of Amillis and the valley hollows on the other.
In addition to the two named walking routes, Amillis has numerous country paths and wooded areas where you can walk or ride on horseback. You can choose between specific circular routes and other trails in the surrounding countryside. The routes offer different landmarks to help with planning, so you do not have to choose a hike based on its length alone.
The Aubetin landscape and nature
The Basse Vallée de l’Aubetin area includes Amillis and is designated a continental ZNIEFF type 2. It covers 2,376.41 hectares. Its characteristic habitats include wet meadows and tall-herb communities, mesic meadows, trout waters, riverside vegetation and alder woods. The landscape therefore ranges from open meadows to riverside areas and woodland; the bend in the Les anciens étangs route is a specific point of reference in the Aubetin landscape.
Church and grotto
The Église Saint-Pierre et Sainte-Flodoberthe has a capital carved in the 11th century. Its vault bosses depict Saint Peter, the Lamb and the symbol of the Holy Spirit. The Grotte Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes is a replica of the Grotte de Massabielle and lies south of Amillis on the heights of the Aubetin Valley. The two sites each have their own distinctive features: the church’s carved and figurative motifs, and the grotto’s connection to Massabielle. The Amillis-Pisseloup walking route leads to the grotto.
A glimpse of local produce
When products are on sale at Ferme de Baleine, visitors can see the bakery and its ovens. The farm sells bread and brioche in Amillis. Some of its grain production—wheat, einkorn, rye and maize—is milled on a stone mill into flour; oils are made from oilseeds such as camelina, sunflower and rapeseed. The bakery and ovens can be viewed when products are on sale.
Cycle route through Amillis
The 39 km Les Comtes de Champagne long-distance cycle route is another point of reference for planning a bike ride: it connects Provins and Coulommiers and passes through Amillis. Partial operation was reported from October 2025. Check the current operating status before setting off. This gives you different ways to get around to choose from: the two local walking routes and a long-distance cycle route connecting Provins and Coulommiers.
