Ville-Dʼavray combines walking paths by the ponds and in the forest with architectural history and connections to Corot. When planning a stay, you can therefore choose between landscape, hiking and architecture as your main interests. The specific route connections and the visitor restrictions at Maison Corot help put these themes into practical perspective.

Ponds and Paths

At the end of the Middle Ages, the local lords created the Vieil étang as a fishpond. The Étangs de Corot grounds have been protected since September 21, 1936. Thus, two distinct historical periods come together in the story of the ponds: the former use of the Vieil étang and the protection status of the grounds since 1936. A walk by the Étangs therefore also offers a historical perspective: the fishpond and its later protected status belong to different chapters of the town’s history.

A pedestrian promenade created in 1986 connects the Étangs de Corot with the center of Ville-Dʼavray and passes through Corot’s former estate. In Ville-Dʼavray, the Promenade des Étangs leads to the Étangs de Ville d’Avray, also known as the Étangs de Corot. This shared naming is useful for finding your way: Étangs de Ville d’Avray and Étangs de Corot refer to the same ponds.

The Forêt domaniale de Fausses-Reposes is crossed by the Ceinture Verte Ouest de l’Île-de-France hiking trail, which connects the Seine loops with Boulogne-Billancourt and Bougival. The forest also offers horseback riding and hiking. For planning purposes, the trail answers a different question from the choice of activity: it connects the places mentioned through the forest, while you can choose between walking and riding for your outing.

Architectural History and Corot Connections

Maison Corot dates from the late 18th century. The house and its garden are listed as historic monuments, are privately owned, and are not open to visitors. Check the current visitor status before your trip if you plan to include the site in your itinerary.

The Château de Ville-d’Avray is a neoclassical building constructed in 1776. In the parish church of Saint-Nicolas, Saint-Marc, Corot’s frescoes adorn the walls of the transept. The two places have different points of interest: the château stands out for its neoclassical architecture, while the church is notable for its artistic connection to Corot.

The themes can also be put in chronological order: the Vieil étang dates back to the end of the Middle Ages; the château was built in 1776; the pond grounds were protected in 1936; and the pedestrian promenade was created in 1986. This historical perspective spans the former use of a body of water, architectural history and protected status, through to a pedestrian link between the Étangs and the town center. These different historical periods offer several ways to decide how to balance landscape and local history during your stay.
