Villechantria can be explored through its distinctive architectural features and changing uses: the octagonal basin of the Fontaine, the rectangular washhouse, the Église St Clair and the history of its mills. The cultural and historical appeal lies in the contrasts: the structures can be compared, while the church and mill each reflect several historical layers.

Fountain, washhouse and church

The basin of the Fontaine de Villechantria is octagonal, while the washhouse is rectangular. Both were listed as historic monuments by decree on 8 January 1997. Their joint listing links the buildings; architecturally, the contrast between their forms offers a tangible way to explore local building history.

The choir of the Église St Clair dates from the 14th century. The church also houses a wooden relief from the 16th century that is classified as a historic monument. The dates refer to different elements: the choir and the relief. The church was built on the site of the former castle-like chapel of Saint-Maurice. This makes it possible to place a predecessor building in the history of the village alongside the dated elements.

For current use, there is a separate practical detail: services are now held in the Église St Clair only on rare occasions—once a year for the Votive Festival, as well as for weddings or funerals in the commune. If attending a service is important to your plans, check the current schedule before your trip.

Mill history and regional context

The Moulin du Pont-Neuf reveals a different kind of history. Before 1788, it was converted from a hemp and clover mill into a grain mill; around 1847, it was rebuilt by the Bailly family. These are two distinct phases: first a change of use, then a rebuilding. The restored mill offers a glimpse of a bygone era. Those interested in changing uses will find a clear sequence here rather than just a single historical date.

An official environmental document from 2016 places Villechantria within the Petite Montagne Natura 2000 site. The regional protected-area context is therefore also part of understanding the village. If the exact boundaries of the site are important to your plans, check the latest information.

The present-day Chemin de la voie romaine is currently considered only a remnant of the route of the ancient road. For specific route planning, check access in advance and do not assume that it is a continuous public route.

An astronomy exhibition was announced for 2026 at the Moulin du Suran. Before making plans, check whether a date is still upcoming and what access arrangements are in place.
