Discover Pupillin through its winegrowing, landscape and heritage. The village lies on the Jura Wine Route and is known as the “world capital of Ploussard (or Poulsard).” Ploussard is a red grape variety typical of the Jura wine region. This wine identity can also be found along the paths through the vineyards and in the history of the local cooperative.
Winegrowing and the Fruitière Vinicole
The Fruitière Vinicole de Pupillin is a wine-tasting cellar, wine shop, cooperative and wine producer. It offers cellar visits, tours of its facilities and wine tastings. The tasting room also offers wine tastings; it is open on weekdays and weekends year-round. Confirm the current visitor arrangements before your visit.
The history of the Fruitière has a specific date: its bylaws were adopted on February 13, 1909, with 33 members and 23 hectares of vineyards. Together with the village’s present-day wine identity, this historical connection provides a distinctive context for discovering Ploussard and Jura winegrowing.
Paths through vineyards and forest
The “Pupillin, capitale du Ploussard” loop is 6 kilometers long and passes through the vineyards of Pupillin. The “L'arboretum de Pupillin” loop is also 6 kilometers long. It passes through the forest of Pupillin and includes an arboretum with 26 species that grow in the commune. The route also leads to the remains of a Gallo-Roman fanum dating from the 1st to the 4th century.
Another option is the Balade Ă Pupillin: this hiking trail, classified as easy, is 5.9 kilometers long and has a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It runs along a vineyard slope with successive terraces of hard limestone and marl slopes. The routes are similar in length, but their themes differ considerably: vineyards, forest and arboretum, or vineyard slope. For the Balade, the difficulty and duration are also provided.
Views and built heritage
At the southern entrance to Pupillin, the Belvédère offers panoramic views over the vineyards of Pupillin and the Jura plain. The Belvédère de Pupillin has a picnic area, an observation kiosk and an orientation table. Here, the views and facilities are the focus, while the walking loops have their own landscape and nature themes.
Smaller built features also provide specific places to visit: Pupillin’s fountains include the Fontaine des Tourterelles, with a roof made of limestone slabs and a basin. The Oratoire Saint-Léger is located on the Chemin des vignes; the demarcation line once ran at the foot of the oratory.
The Petit temple antique ou fanum at Le Bioulet in Pupillin is a Gallo-Roman site from the Roman Imperial period. It was listed as a historic monument by decree on November 2, 1987. Gallo-Roman heritage can thus be found both at this site and as a destination on the L'arboretum de Pupillin loop, while the fountains and oratory offer other, distinct aspects of the built heritage.
