La Chaumusse combines the Ayme, which flows through the village, with tangible examples of cultural heritage and artisanal food production. There are also a variety of excursions: two cycling routes pass through La Chaumusse, a motorcycle tour is listed as a one-day route, and in winter, guided sleigh rides are offered in the Grandvaux. When planning, consider the theme, mode of transport and season.

Water and architectural features of the cultural heritage

At Pont de Lemme, there is a fountain with a wash house made of dressed stone. It stands beneath a shelter built of limestone masonry, with a pitched roof covered in tiles. A pitched roof has a single sloping roof surface. The structure therefore brings together dressed stone, masonry and tiles; the fountain and wash house are also part of the same complex. The Ayme flows through La Chaumusse, adding a river that runs through the village to these water-related features.

Another covered fountain is part of La Chaumusse’s local cultural heritage. Its dressed-stone pillar and two stone basins distinguish its design from the fountain complex at Pont de Lemme. A cistern with a livestock trough is also described: it is made of dressed stone and has a basin and a cast-iron wheel. These different structures offer tangible points of interest for anyone interested in fountains, wash houses and other water-related architectural features.

Regional products and a tour

Plaisirs FrOMaJura makes artisanal dessert creams and ice cream in La Chaumusse or the Grandvaux, using milk from local producers. The products are made with milk from the Grandvaux and organic cream from SCAF de Saint-Maurice-en-Montagne. The cream comes from farms that participate in the Jura AOP scheme. Products are also made with milk purchased from SCAF du Pays Grandvallier. Supplier relationships may change, and the product range may also evolve.

The workshop offers a tour of the production process every Thursday morning, followed by a tasting. The visit therefore combines an insight into how the products are made with a tasting. If you want to make sure you can visit, check the current schedule before your trip.

Routes and seasonal excursions

The “Autour du lac de l’Abbaye” cycling route passes through La Chaumusse. The “Grandvaux, Malvaux, au fil de l’eau” route also runs through the village. Another option is “Balade surprise sur le Grandvaux”: this 51-kilometre motorcycle tour is designed as a one-day trip, and La Chaumusse is listed as one of the places on the route. Check the route conditions before setting out.

In winter, Les Attelages du Grandvaux offers guided sleigh rides in the Grandvaux. This activity therefore differs from the cycling routes and the one-day motorcycle tour in both its mode of transport and the time of year. As it is a seasonal offering, check availability before your trip.
