La Chassagne brings together two distinct highlights: cycling routes run through the commune, and historic buildings shape its local history. The Enceinte, the parish church on a hill east of the village, and the remains of La Motte represent different aspects of the local heritage. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether cycling or the buildings and historic traces in La Chassagne should take priority.
Cycling routes through La Chassagne
The La Maison des Étangs-Ouest mountain biking route passes through La Chassagne and is suitable for e-mountain bikes. It starts and ends in Les Deux Fays. Parking is available at the Salle des Fêtes (Maison des Etangs) car park in Les Deux Fays; check access information before setting off. You should also take local trail conditions into account when planning.
Another option is the signposted Boucle 11: En Bresse-Revermont. This 88.2 km circular cycling route also passes through La Chassagne. Check route conditions and signage again before setting out. The two routes offer different points of reference: for La Maison des Étangs-Ouest, suitability for e-mountain bikes and the start and finish in Les Deux Fays are important; for Boucle 11, they are the length and the signposted circular route. This makes it easier to choose based on whether the type of bike and starting point, or the route format and length, matter most to you.
Buildings and local history
The parish church of La Chassagne stands on a hill east of the village and is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Two dates offer historical reference points: the Enceinte in La Chassagne is a fortified structure dating from the 13th century; in 1625, the former chapel was elevated to a parish church. South of La Chassagne, La Motte preserves the remains of a circular castle mound. The church, fortified structure, chapel and castle mound thus offer different points of connection with the area's history.
Visits in Sellières
Guided visits take place every Wednesday in July and August in Sellières. As the programme is seasonal, check the dates for your travel year. Also in Sellières is the Musée des salières, which has been open to the public since 2018; check current access arrangements before your visit. The collection comprises more than 6,000 objects related to table culture, all of which come from donations from a range of sources. The size of the collection may change.
A different consideration determines which of these cultural offerings to choose: for the guided visits, the season and day of the week determine the timing; for the Musée des salières, the focus on table culture and checking current access arrangements are the main considerations. You can therefore plan either around the Wednesday visits in summer or around the museum theme you are interested in.
