Saint-Loup-Sur-Semouse brings together river scenery, nature watching and a distinctive local history. The town lies on a broad plain at an altitude of about 250 m, where the Semouse, Augronne and Combeauté meet. You can plan your visit around a range of interests: walks and fishing at Roupoix, birdwatching at Tournant des Îles, an appointment at the Conservatoire de la Cité du Meuble, or the Monday market. The theme that shapes your stay can also guide your search for a hotel in Saint-Loup-Sur-Semouse.

Rivers and nature spots

The waterways meet at different points: the Augronne flows into the Semouse upstream of the town centre, while the Combeauté joins it a few kilometres downstream of the town centre. Tournant des Îles comprises two bodies of water with a combined area of approximately 25 hectares. Many visitors and walkers use the site as a place of peace and relaxation, where they can observe abundant flora and fauna. Birdlife includes European bee-eaters, swans, coots, great crested grebes and cormorants. Nature and birdwatching are therefore the main attractions at Tournant des Îles.

At Roupoix, walking and fishing are among the activities on offer. Fishing options include no-kill carp fishing and fishing for predatory fish, including pike and zander. There is also a 1.8 km circular route. It is accessible to pushchairs and people with reduced mobility; check accessibility before your visit, as conditions may change. Tournant des ĂŽles and Roupoix offer different experiences: the former focuses on waterways and birdlife, while the latter offers walking and fishing.

Furniture history and protected architecture

The Conservatoire de la Cité du Meuble is now located on the former site of the Usines Réunies. Visits are possible by prior appointment. If you plan to visit, arrange your appointment in advance.

The Château des Bouly is also part of the town’s history. The protected features include the façades and roofs, the interior staircase and its balustrade, and the decorated Salle à manger on the ground floor. The protection was established by a decree dated 2 March 1979. These features show that the protection covers different parts of the building, not just its exterior.

Monday market and mountain bike route

The Monday market brings together local producers, craftspeople and traders. The organisation of the market every Monday was confirmed in 1772, 1793 and 1798. These dates establish Monday as market day in the town’s history. This distinction is useful when planning: the market takes place on a set day, Monday, while a visit to the Conservatoire requires an appointment in advance.

Another way to explore the surrounding landscape is the “Circuit VTT – Du Planey à l'Hermitage” mountain bike loop. It starts in Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse, crosses the Vôge area and passes at the foot of the mysterious Gouffre de la source du Planey, with its turquoise water. The route thus links its starting point in Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse with a course through the Vôge area and the natural feature mentioned above.
