Raincourt between church and water

Raincourt combines sacred art and architectural history with a specific waterside activity: the village pond is open for fishing. The small village lies on a slope below its church, and the Mance flows through it. If you are considering Raincourt for a stay, two different interests come into play: the church as a cultural attraction and fishing as an activity at the pond.

A village on a slope

The D3 runs through Raincourt, and the Mance also flows through the village. The road and river are separate points of reference: the D3 indicates a transport route, while the Mance is a watercourse. Together with the village on the slope below its church, they provide a sense of the area’s transport links, waterways and elevation. These features complement the cultural perspective on Raincourt with its geographical setting.

Saint-Valbert Church: architectural history and interior

Raincourt Church was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century and houses furnishings from the 18th and 19th centuries. These dates describe different aspects: the rebuilding provides context for the building’s history, while the furnishings span two centuries. This means the church can be viewed both in terms of a phase in its construction and the period covered by its furnishings. The church also has three naves. In church architecture, a “nave” is a longitudinal section of the church interior; three naves describe a layout divided into three such sections. For architecture enthusiasts, these offer two complementary perspectives: the building’s development and the form of its interior.

The Vierge à l’Enfant statue

Among the church’s works of art is the Vierge à l’Enfant statue. It is made of carved, painted, polychrome-gilded wood. “Polychrome” refers to a multicolored finish; this describes the work’s coloring, while the gilding is another feature of its surface. The French title translates as “Virgin and Child” and names the subject. Two questions can help you understand the statue: What is depicted, and how are the material and surface finished? The title names the subject, while the material details describe the technique and finish.

Fishing at the village pond

Raincourt’s village pond is open for fishing. The Mance and the pond are two distinct water-related features to consider when planning a trip: the river flows through Raincourt, while fishing is the specific activity offered at the pond. If fishing is your main interest, the village pond provides a clear point of reference. The distinction can help you choose the focus of your visit: the river describes the village’s geographical setting, while the pond is associated with a specific waterside activity.

Guided village tour

A visitor programme in July 2026 featured the Raincourt family’s château as one of three châteaux on a guided tour of the village. If you would like to include this in your plans, check in advance whether a guided tour is available and what access conditions apply to private properties.
