Dung is shaped by its many forests and the narrow, steep-sided valley of the Rupt. The old village extended along both sides of the valley; to the west lies most of the area used for agriculture and forestry, on a limestone Jura plateau. The former Moulin de Dung also has a varied history, and there are several options for walks, hikes and bike rides. When weighing up Dung as a destination, you can therefore distinguish between its landscapes, industrial heritage and outdoor activities.

Valley, forests and the Jura plateau

The Rupt flows through the narrow, steep-sided valley, along both sides of which the old village extended. To the west of the valley, most of the area used for agriculture and forestry lies on the limestone Jura plateau. The rocks found there include Argovian, Rauracian and Séquanien. The area reaches an elevation of 409.423 m at Bois du Sainans. In Dung, the narrow river corridor and the western plateau thus form two distinct landscapes.

The changing uses of the Moulin de Dung

The former Moulin de Dung was initially used as a watchmaking workshop, where rubies were ground for precision clockworks. In turn, the mill served as a grain mill, an oil mill, a hemp-breaking mill, a nail forge, a sawmill and a power station. This sequence links precision engineering with the processing of grain, oil and hemp, as well as craft and energy-related uses. The contrast between grinding rubies for precision mechanisms and the mill’s other functions makes its industrial history tangible and varied.

Walks, hiking and cycling

On foot, you can choose between a walking path along the Rupt and a circular hike with a set route and duration. The walking path was created beside the stream. Les étangs des Princes passes through Dung and is an easy, 9.5 km PR loop taking three hours. This makes it a distinct hike with clearly specified details, while the path along the Rupt focuses on the stream.

There are also different stages of planning for cycling routes. Dung is part of the 45 km Circuit 11, which passes through the village according to the 2023 edition of the regional cycling guide. The plan for the Dung–Présentevillers cycle link, reported on 8 January 2026, envisages a continuous, one-kilometre connection to the existing cycle path. It is intended to make access to EuroVelo 6 easier. As this is a proposal, you should check the planned completion date again before your ride.
