Voujeaucourt offers a tangible connection to its history: religious buildings, crossings of the Doubs and architectural details sit alongside cycling and outdoor activities. For orientation, it helps to distinguish between two bridges: the road bridge has a long history as a crossing between two regions; another bridge, the metal footbridge, carries the Nantes–Budapest EuroVelo route.
Religious buildings and architectural history
The Temple de Voujeaucourt is listed as a historic monument; the designation covers the entire building. Its simple oval shape is considered unique in the Pays de Montbéliard and relatively rare in general. Inside, an altar, a pulpit and a chancel screen from the 19th century have been preserved. Both its distinctive shape and its historic furnishings offer a unique insight into the temple.
The Catholic church of Saint-Michel marks a different point in time: it was built and consecrated in 1867 on the site of a medieval sanctuary. The church houses the painting “Les pèlerins d’Emmaüs,” painted in 1946 by Pierre Jouffroy, a son of the village. A life-size wooden Christ on the cross can also be seen there. According to tradition, it is said to have come from Belchamp Abbey and to date from the late 16th century.
Another architectural detail can be found at 82 Grande rue: a covered well with a washhouse. Together with the two churches, it broadens the view from religious architectural history to other examples of local architecture.
The two bridges over the Doubs
The road bridge over the Doubs is in the centre of Voujeaucourt. For a long time, it was the only crossing over the river between Franche-Comté and the Pays de Montbéliard. It was partially destroyed six times during the wars, but its arches have been well preserved. It therefore offers a way to trace both the crossing’s former importance and the marks left by its eventful history.
The former towpath bridge is a separate structure: it was demolished in 2012 and replaced by a metal footbridge. The Nantes–Budapest EuroVelo route crosses this footbridge. The two structures thus represent different aspects of the Doubs: the road bridge is linked to the historic river crossing, while the metal footbridge is part of a named cycling route.
Park and discovery trail
The Parc de la promenade du Doubs is a tree-filled park by the river. Facilities include children’s play equipment, a fitness area and a cycling track for children. There is also a picnic table by the Doubs. If you plan to use it, check the latest park information in advance. On a ride along EuroVelo 6, the park makes a good stopping place for a picnic or a short break.
The Sentier ludique de la CĂ´te Roux offers a different focus. This 750-metre discovery trail lies between Voujeaucourt and Mandeure and is accessible to everyone. Themed stations, games and animal sculptures introduce visitors to the trees and features of this small woodland area. Check the latest accessibility information before your visit. The two outdoor attractions are clearly distinct: the park combines play and fitness facilities with a stop by the Doubs, while the discovery trail draws attention to the woodland.
