A single-arch bridge over the Chiuvonu, a cast-iron Marianne and a cultural trail through narrow lanes bring Aullène’s history to life. At the same time, an altitude of 850 metres, two promontories dominated by Punta d’Ariola, and the Chiuvone flowing past the village shape the landscape. A stay here brings together cultural history, mountain scenery and events throughout the year.
Landscape and Watercourse
Aullène lies at an altitude of 850 metres and extends around two promontories dominated by Punta d’Ariola. The peak is 1,449 metres high. The Chiuvone rises on the Cuscionu plateau, forms the north-northeastern boundary of Aullène municipality, flows past the village and then continues towards Valinco. The village’s elevation and the course of the river can thus be understood as distinct geographical reference points.
Bridge, Fountain and Sacred Buildings
The Pont du Chiuvonu is a single-arch bridge over the Chiuvonu stream. The Fontaine de la Liberté also offers a tangible historical connection: the fountain dates from 1881 and bears a cast-iron Marianne from 1863. The figure therefore predates the fountain itself.
The parish church of Saint Nicolas was built at the beginning of the 19th century; its pulpit is supported by four winged dolphins. The Sant’Antioccu chapel stands on the heights above the village, less than a kilometre from the church. The construction date, pulpit motif and location of the chapel offer different perspectives on the village’s history.
Transhumance and Historical Traces
Aullène has a long tradition of livestock farming and transhumance. The trail “Da piaghja a muntagna – Le village de la transhumance” runs through the narrow lanes and offers a way to explore the village’s history and cultural heritage. Transhumance is thus presented not only as part of the village’s history, but also as the subject of a named trail through Aullène.
Campanaju is considered a possible site of a fortress built in the 13th century and associated with Sinucello Della Rocca. Aullène’s Protestant temple, meanwhile, bears witness to disputes between the republican mayor and the Bonapartist priest.
Hiking, Festivals and Tastings
The hike to Rocher Oscillant is easy, four kilometres long and takes about three hours. If you drive up to Col de la Vaccia, the trail is on the right-hand side of the road before Pont de l’Anellu. Allow about three hours and check trail conditions before setting out.
A Fiera d’Audde brings craftspeople and visitors together and takes place on the last weekend of July. The festival in honour of Saint Antioche, held annually on the first Sunday in August, includes religious services and festivities. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the exact date in advance.
Cave Tramoni offers wine tastings in Aullène. Check opening times and tasting availability before your trip if you plan to include one in your stay.
