Viggianello combines old Corsican village architecture with a walk to the ruins of the medieval castle above the village. At the end of the walk, the view stretches across the Gulf of Valinco, to the Aiguilles de Bavella and the Capu di Muro tower. This gives you two distinct themes to focus on when planning your trip: the village’s lanes and churches, and the landscape around the castle walk. You can then decide which theme you would like to spend more time exploring.

Lanes, Houses and Churches

Many of the houses in Viggianello date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The old lanes are part of a distinctive heritage that bears witness to life in Corsican villages in earlier times. In the hamlet of Vetaro, the Casatorra has twin windows. These architectural points of interest range from the houses and lanes to a single building detail. If you enjoy looking more closely, you can take in both the development of the village layout over several centuries and the Casatorra’s distinctive pair of windows.

The Église Saint-Sauveur was built in 1863 to designs by the architect Émile Hess, on the site of an earlier vicar’s chapel. Its bell tower is topped by a lantern. The building thus connects the 19th century with an older religious site, while also showcasing a distinctive architectural feature. The church is open year-round; access may change during restoration work. Services and polyphonic concerts are held there, and curious visitors are welcome.

Another historical landmark is the ruins of the Romanesque church of Saint Jean Baptiste, visible on the border with the commune of Propriano. The church was built on an ancient site and belonged to the former Pieve Viggiano. The ancient site, Romanesque church and former pieve provide different historical points of reference.

Maquis, Castle and Views

Viggianello lies partly on the right bank of the Rizzanese and offers a panorama of the Gulf of Valinco. The walk to the medieval castle passes through the Corsican maquis above the village and ends at a summit. From there, you can see the gulf, the Aiguilles de Bavella and the Capu di Muro tower. A cistern has been preserved in the castle ruins. This surviving part of the castle adds a historical detail to the views. Trail conditions may vary; check them before setting out.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

The historic buildings and old lanes offer a different focus from the walk through the maquis: here, the emphasis is on village history and architecture, while there it is on the landscape and views. Consider which of these themes matters more to your trip, or whether you would like to make time for both. When looking for a hotel in Viggianello, you can use this as a starting point.
