For a stay in Tiuccia, the coast, archaeology and Genoese history offer distinct points of interest. Liamone Beach, the prehistoric site on Monte Lazzu and the Capigliolu Tower bring these themes to life. When looking for a hotel, first consider whether you want to focus on the beach, walks or historic sites.

Beach and coastal setting

Liamone Beach begins just beyond Punta Capigliolo and stretches along both sides of the mouth of the Liamone River. The headland and river mouth are clear landmarks for finding your way around. The beach is protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral.

Monte Lazzu: archaeological site and views

Monte Lazzu rises in the hills above Tiuccia, offering views over the Liamone plain and the Gulf of Sagone. It is also an archaeological site: a rock shelter used as a tomb was discovered there, containing metal objects from the Early Iron Age. An easy, shaded path beneath cork oaks leads to the prehistoric site. Here, scenic views, a walk and an archaeological destination come together.

Towers, fortifications and earlier history

The Capigliolu Tower is a ruined Genoese tower on Punta Capigliolo, north of the Gulf of La Liscia and at an elevation of 91 metres. Construction began in 1582. It was part of a series of Genoese coastal fortifications built by the Republic of Genoa between 1530 and 1620 to defend against attacks by the Barbary corsairs. The start of construction in 1582 therefore falls within the period when these fortifications were built.

The hills above Tiuccia are also home to the ruins of the Château de Capraja, one of the last estates of the Cinarchesi. In Roman times, Tiuccia was an observation and defence post. Along with the Genoese tower, these sites provide several historical points of reference, from Roman times to the ruins associated with the Cinarchesi.

Walks and other routes

To choose a walk, you can compare the destinations directly. An easy, shaded path beneath cork oaks leads to Monte Lazzu and the prehistoric site. Another easy walk starts at the entrance to Tiuccia and heads north to the Fortin and the Genoese tower of Capigliolu, with views of Liamone Beach and the Gulf of Liscia. The routes therefore differ in their destinations: the archaeological site and cork oaks on one, the Fortin, tower and coastal views on the other.

The Casaglione-Tiuccia area also has paths, tracks and rural routes through the maquis, leading to viewpoints and access points to the coast. These routes add further ways to explore the landscape on foot to the two walks.

Getting there from Ajaccio

From Ajaccio, follow the D81 towards Sagone as far as Tiuccia/Casaglione. The drive takes about 30 minutes. The coastal road is straightforward and quick, and accessible to all vehicles.
