In Monacia-d'Aullène, options range from easy walks to challenging hikes. Coastal trails, Genoese defensive architecture and historic churches offer a variety of experiences. The landscape also changes in character: by the sea, the Maquis and pebble coves define the scenery, while the Massif de Cagna extends to high-altitude meadows and forests.

Coastal trails and viewpoints near Roccapina

Near Furnellu Beach, a car park provides access to a coastal trail leading to the Tour d'Olmeto and onward to Pointe de Caniscione. The coastal area of Caniscione, below Monacia-d'Aullène, is characterised by Maquis, pale rocks and small pebble coves. From Caniscione, views extend to the Moines islets, Sardinia and Omu di Cagna.

The trail to the Tour d'Olmeto passes through coastal Maquis featuring myrtle, strawberry tree, heather, rockrose, Phoenician juniper, holm oak, sarsaparilla, mastic and tamarisk. It follows a marine abrasion platform that was formerly used for agriculture. The hike to the Tour d'Olmeto is rated easy and is a 3.94-kilometre circular route. The tower is one of the Genoese towers built from the 16th century onwards to protect the island from incursions by the Barbary corsairs.

The walk in Roccapina takes about two hours there and back; access to the tower is prohibited. The Sentier du Belvédère is open to the public, and its descent through the Roccapina Maquis takes about 45 minutes. The time estimates have different reference points: for the Belvédère, the time refers to the descent; for the walk in Roccapina, it refers to the round trip.

A casa di Roccapina has museographic facilities created as part of the site's development. The visit includes the Sentier de l’Oriu: a 20-minute audio-guided walk through the world of taffoni, featuring a reconstructed Oriu.

Circular trails and heritage

The Sentier du Patrimoine in Monacia-d'Aullène is an easy, four-kilometre circular walk. Three Orii can be discovered along the way. The municipality describes the walk as family-friendly and suitable for everyone. Another prehistoric site is the Oriu de Cubia: it and the surrounding caves have been inhabited since prehistoric times.

The Chapelle Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul is located in Giannuccio. Its main construction phase took place at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The granite building has a single-nave layout and an exposed wooden roof structure. The parish church of Saint-Nicolas in Monacia-d'Aullène was built in the mid-19th century and remodelled in the 20th century.

The Lion de Roccapina is another feature of the municipality's natural and cultural landscape: the sculpture, shaped by erosion, is made of pink granite. The Étang de Furnellu is considered a remarkable natural site. Herons, egrets, flamingos and ducks can be found there.

Hikes on Omu di Cagna

The hike to Omu di Cagna is 8.6 kilometres long, with 800 metres of elevation gain, and is rated challenging. Omu is a granite boulder at an altitude of 1,218 metres. From there, views extend across the far south of Corsica, to Sardinia and as far as the Gulf of Valinco. By comparison, the Sentier du Patrimoine, at four kilometres and rated easy, offers a very different level of challenge.

The Massif de Cagna encompasses a variety of natural environments, from Maquis to high-altitude meadows and pine and fir forests. Check local trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
