A church with wall paintings, a megalithic burial complex and the scenery on the Golfe de Lava reveal the different sides of Appietto. There are also hiking destinations at Rocher des Gozzi and Punta Pastinaca. If you are planning a stay, it helps to decide first whether cultural history, the coast or hiking will be your main focus.

Scenery between Rocher des Gozzi and Golfe de Lava

Rocher des Gozzi reaches an elevation of 705 metres and overlooks the Pays Ajaccien. The Golfe de Lava represents a different aspect of the landscape: it covers 150 hectares of Appietto’s municipal area and includes a low sandy terrace and the lower course of the Lava stream. These provide two distinct points of reference for the natural side of the municipality: the ridge and the coastal area.

At Tamaricciu on the Golfe de Lava, the Dune du Golfe de Lava area includes a secondary coastal dune and a stand of beach lentisk scrub behind the beach. The area is designated under the Habitats Directive. Those interested in landforms will find here, alongside the sandy terrace and stream course, these distinctive coastal habitats as another facet of Appietto.

Churches, chapels and historical landmarks

Santa Maria Assunta was built in 1532 as Appietto’s new church. Later renovations gave it a bell tower about 30 metres high. The interior features trompe-l’œil and grisaille wall paintings by Ivan Choupik. The building’s history, tower and painted decoration offer different points of reference for understanding the church: both its origins in the 16th century and the building’s later design.

The Chapel of San Chirgu is thought to have been built at the end of the 14th century. Until Santa Maria Assunta was built in 1532, it served as Appietto’s parish church. It stands on the Saint-Cyr plateau and overlooks the Gulf of Ajaccio and the Lava Valley. The chapel therefore brings together an earlier religious function and a striking location with two named views.

The Chapel of San Sistru is also part of the town’s religious history: it dates from the 14th century, was Appietto’s main church before it was abandoned, and is now a ruin. In the historic hamlet of Volpaja stands the traditional Four de Volpaja, regarded as evidence of the municipality’s medieval history. The two sites have different points of emphasis: San Sistru recalls an earlier church function, while the Four represents the hamlet’s medieval heritage.

An even older landmark is Ciutulaghja, a megalithic burial complex dating from the end of the 4th millennium BC. The dolmen consists of three upright supporting stones; only scattered fragments of the capstone remain. This specific structure differs markedly from the churches and chapels and adds a prehistoric landmark to Appietto’s cultural and historical heritage.

Coast and nautical leisure activities

There is a centre for nautical leisure activities at Lava Beach. The options mentioned include jet skiing, boat trips and pedal boating. The activities range from trips on the water to pedal boating; operators and availability may vary. If you would like to include water sports in your travel plans, check the specific options available during your visit.

Hiking destinations with different points of focus

A hike to Monte Gozzi begins at the car park by the Chapel of San Chirgu. The circular hike to Rocher des Gozzi and Punta Pastinaca also starts there; the car park is opposite Appietto. The destinations distinguish the two options: one leads to Monte Gozzi, the other is a circular route to Rocher des Gozzi and Punta Pastinaca. This lets you plan your hike around the destination that interests you most.

The circular hike reaches the summit of Punta Pastinaca, which is described as offering 360-degree views. It therefore combines a clearly named destination with a viewpoint at the summit. Before setting out, check current trail conditions, as they may change independently of the route description.

These points of focus give you a basis for planning your trip around your interests.
