The Musée de Saint-Dizier houses more than 30,000 objects and combines a wide-ranging collection with distinctive highlights: from Merovingian grave goods to Hector Guimard’s cast-iron works. The theater, historic buildings and routes related to water and cast-iron art also shape the selection.

Museum and Special Collections

The Musée de Saint-Dizier displays grave goods from three aristocratic Merovingian tombs. Another special feature is its collection of Hector Guimard’s cast-iron works, the second largest of its kind in the world. These two highlights lead to different chapters of history: Merovingian burial offerings and cast-iron art.

MUSE Découverte provides a permanent introductory art trail in the museum, designed around playful and educational activities. Exhibition content may change. The museum also offers educational workshops and guided tours for children and adults. If you are planning to attend one of these activities, check the current program in advance.

The Tour dite “MIKO” is also connected to a specific theme: one room houses the Ortiz family’s tricycle and advertising objects documenting the history of MIKO ice cream.

Theater, Architecture and Heritage

The Théâtre de Saint-Dizier is a small Italian-style theater listed in the supplementary inventory of French historic monuments. Its restoration in 2007 incorporated decorations from the 1920s. This brings together a particular architectural scale and a clearly identified historical detail.

Au Petit Paris is another example of Art Brut: the original work was created by Marcel Dhièvre and has been listed in the supplementary inventory of French historic monuments since 1984. At the foot of the fortifications of the Château et ses fortifications stand three 13th-century towers: the Tour du Saint-Esprit, the Tour de la Batterie and the Tour du Moulin. The Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption preserves a collection of statues from the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Les Crassées site contains the remains of a Gallo-Roman rural residence and a necropolis. Alongside the theater, towers and church, they offer a glimpse of different types of heritage, spanning more than one era.

Town Trail and Other Routes

La Grande Boucle de Saint-Dizier is an 8 km circular route through the town center, along the Marne and the canal. The route includes nine sites connected to water. This makes it possible to distinguish a water-related focus within the town from the longer-distance routes.

The Route de la Fonte d’Art starts in Saint-Dizier and forms a 91.4 km circular route passing ten sights. It runs through villages in the valleys of the Blaise and the Marne, which are considered the undisputed birthplace of cast-iron art in the 19th century. Compared with the 8 km loop in the town center, it covers a much larger area and offers a distinct approach to cast-iron art.

The wider region has 200 km of cycling routes for exploring the area from Saint-Dizier. The network’s extent may change as a result of future infrastructure works. Another route runs from Saint-Dizier to Lac du Der along the feeder canal that supplies water to the lake.

Your choice will therefore depend above all on the focus you prefer: museum, theater and heritage, or routes of varying lengths. If you are looking for a hotel in Saint-Dizier, you can plan your outings around these themes and routes without combining the town and regional routes into a single tour.
