Parnoy-en-Bassigny brings together abbey history, protected monuments and practical opportunities for a walk. Each theme offers a different focus: Morimond represents a long historical arc, while the crosses and religious art draw attention to individual heritage sites. When looking for a holiday rental, choosing between cultural history and outdoor activities can help you tailor your stay to your interests.

The history of Morimond Abbey

Morimond Abbey was founded around 1117 and exerted influence throughout Europe. Its ruins have been protected as historic monuments since 30 October 1925. Archaeological excavations have uncovered significant remains dating from the 12th to the 18th century. These dates refer to different things: the foundation marks the beginning of the abbey, the finds span a long period, and the protection date applies to the ruins. Morimond can therefore be understood through its early history, its later traces and its current protected status.

Crosses, architecture and religious art

A 15th-century cross stands in front of the town hall in Parnoy-en-Bassigny and is protected as a historic monument. Another cross in the cemetery dates from the 16th century and is included in the register of historic monuments. The two crosses therefore differ not only in the century they date from, but also in the stated form of their protection.

The architecture of Château de Fresnoy comprises a central section and two low side wings. The church in Fresnoy-en-Bassigny houses a silver reliquary bust of Saint Ursula dating from the 15th century. Other features include a tombstone for Bénigne Petit, the wife of Blaise Briffaut, and a processional staff depicting the Virgin and Child. The château is notable for its architectural layout, while the religious objects offer a distinct perspective on art and memorial history.

Sainte-Ursule Chapel and visits

An annual exhibition is held in Sainte-Ursule Chapel. In summer 2025, opening hours were limited to Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m., until 28 September. These opening hours apply to 2025; check the current schedule before your trip. Guided tours of Morimond for groups are available by arrangement. A visit is also possible using the free Id-Vizit app. Group tours and app-based visits are therefore different ways to explore Morimond.

Hiking and fishing

The Sentier du moine at Morimond is a very easy 9.7-kilometre circular trail. Its stated length and difficulty are useful guides when planning a hike; also check local conditions before setting out. The ponds at Morimond are used for fishing and are also connected with hiking. The circular trail and the ponds thus offer two different ways to enjoy outdoor activities.

When planning your trip, you can consider these interests separately: the abbey, monuments and religious artworks make up the cultural and historical side, while the trail and ponds appeal to other interests. This distinction can help you plan the kind of stay you want and find a suitable holiday rental.
