The château, church and lavoir give Neuilly-l'Évêque a clear cultural focus; cycling travelers can also choose between two distinct route themes. This lets you plan your stay around a specific interest: architectural history in the village, or a cycling stage and route planning.

Château and church: different historical periods

The Château de Dampierre is a 17th-century château in Neuilly-l'Évêque. A decree dated December 23, 1981, protects the entrance portal, the façades and roofs of the Château de Dampierre, as well as the façades and roofs of the south wing of the outbuildings and the dovecote. The château is private property, visits are not possible, and it can only be viewed from the outside. Check the local visiting conditions before you arrive. The construction date, protection date and precisely specified parts of the buildings are important reference points for understanding its history.

The Eglise de la Nativité-de-Notre-Dame de Neuilly-l'Évêque has been listed in the supplementary inventory of Monuments historiques since November 19, 1990. The contract for its complete reconstruction was awarded in 1805 on the site of a former château. The dates relate to different events: the reconstruction contract was awarded in 1805, and the church was listed in 1990.

Architectural details: lavoir and fountain

The Lavoir de Neuilly-l'Évêque has a large basin. Its roof is supported by two cast-iron pillars; the water outlet is a zoomorphic spout in the form of a griffin with a lion's head that transitions into a dragon's head. Zoomorphic means animal-shaped and describes the figurative design of the water outlet. Three aspects can be distinguished here: the basin, the supporting structure and the outlet—a different design emphasis from that of the château, whose protected features include the portal, façades and roofs.

The Fontaine de Neuilly-l'Évêque is near the town hall. The town hall provides a specific point of reference for orienting yourself as you make your way to the fountain.

Cycling plans: a tour and a route passing through the village

Les forts is a moderately difficult road cycling route, 51 km long, with 683 m of elevation gain. It takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes. The route passes near three fortifications and offers a brief overview of this network of forts. For planning, distance, elevation gain, difficulty and duration all go together: the distance alone does not describe the effort involved. Plan for food and drink, breaks and other activities in addition to the tour duration. Route details may change, so check the information before setting out.

The daily stage from Langres to Montigny-le-Roi on La Meuse à vélo EuroVelo 19 passes through Neuilly-l'Évêque. The two cycling routes answer different planning questions: Les forts provides the tour statistics, while the EuroVelo stage indicates the route through the village. The route may change, so check the latest stage information before your trip.
