When planning a trip to Mesnil-Saint-Père, two very different trail lengths are available: the three-kilometre Sentier du Lapin Blanc village walk and the 28-kilometre Voie Verte around Lac d’Orient. The area also offers the landscapes of the Champagne humide, a fine-sand beach and examples of cultural heritage. Depending on your interests, your stay can focus on the village, nature or activities on the water; the season matters if you want to swim under supervision.

Trails between the village and the lake

The Sentier du Lapin Blanc is a free, three-kilometre village walk, with a stated duration of one and a half hours. It offers a chance to discover the local fauna and flora while also providing insights into the village’s cultural heritage. The trail thus connects two ways of seeing Mesnil-Saint-Père: its natural surroundings and its history.

The Voie Verte is a 28-kilometre loop around Lac d’Orient. It is intended for pedestrians, cyclists and roller skaters, runs through a natural area and often passes through wooded sections. It also provides access to numerous activities around the lakes. The two trails suit different kinds of outings: the Sentier has a specified length and duration, while the Voie Verte forms a much larger loop around the lake.

Landscape and activities on the water

Mesnil-Saint-Père preserves a traditional landscape of the Champagne humide, with forests, wet meadows, pools, ponds and orchards. These landscape features are favoured places for fauna and flora. For nature enthusiasts, there is more to see than the lake: wetland areas, bodies of water, woodland and orchards are also part of the local landscape. The Sentier du Lapin Blanc offers a chance to discover the local fauna and flora, providing its own way to explore this natural setting.

The beach at Lac d’Orient in Mesnil-Saint-Père has fine sand. Canoeing and kayaking are possible on Lac d’Orient. The beach and activities on the water offer different ways to enjoy the lake. Swimming at the beach is supervised within a designated safety zone only during the summer season, from early July to late August. If supervised swimming is important for your trip, keep this period in mind and check local information in advance.

Cultural heritage in the village

The Église Saint-André was added to France’s Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments on 21 December 1982. In 2007, it was closed to visitors and for religious services because of its very poor condition. If you are planning a visit, check whether it is currently open before you go.

Another historic landmark is the Grange dîmière, a very old building partly clad in half-timbering. It once served as the tithe barn for the priests of Mesnil. The church and the Grange dîmière represent different aspects of the area’s cultural heritage: for the church, its historic-monument status and date are important; for the Grange, its construction and former function. Local cultural heritage thus brings together a precisely dated heritage designation and the history of an older agricultural building.
