La Loge-Aux-Chèvres combines practical hiking opportunities with a history closely rooted in the village. For your stay, you can choose between a moderate seven-kilometre loop, a one-hour circular walk and the GRP “Tour des lacs.” In the village, the Église Saint-Antoine, a fountain, a wooden cross and an orchard add to the picture of a place whose landscape is shaped by forests, meadows and ponds.
Hiking and Trails
The “Circuit du Grand Orient” circular trail starts at the Maison du Parc. The moderate route is 7 kilometres long and takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. It heads towards La Loge-Aux-Chèvres, then follows an unpaved path alongside the village. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
A trail description updated on 27 August 2018 also describes a one-hour circular walk starting from La Loge-Aux-Chèvres. It follows a path towards La Villeneuve-au-Chêne and also mentions the ponds. This gives you two specific timeframes to consider when planning your day: one hour and 1 hour 45 minutes.
Another named trail, the GRP “Tour des lacs,” passes through the commune. After following the ponds, it runs through both high and low forests. The routes described thus feature a variety of landscapes: the path alongside the village, the ponds and the forests.
Architecture and Local History
The Église Saint-Antoine was built of brick in 1893. Its furnishings include a carved stone baptismal font from the Renaissance, donated by the de Mesgrigny family. The church also houses a statue of Saint Eligius depicting him shoeing a horse. The brick building and its older furnishings bring together different periods of local history in a single structure.
La Loge-Aux-Chèvres was established in the 12th century when the Forêt d’Orient was cleared. According to a topographical dictionary, the village may already have existed in 1199. The place name is also linked to working in the forest: it is said to derive from a device for sawing wood used by loggers in the late 19th century. Both the traditional account of the village’s origins and its name thus point to its connection with the forest.
Landscape and Small Discoveries
The landscape around La Loge-Aux-Chèvres includes deep forests, meadows, ponds and orchards. At the edge of the village, an orchard borders a bright, unpaved path. A description updated on 28 August 2024 states that it is open to the public. A wooden cross, referred to as “Croix,” is also listed as open to the public; its description was updated on the same day.
An old fountain has been refurbished as a flower-filled spot. A description updated on 21 January 2025 also states that it is open to the public. These small places add specific destinations in and around the village to the hiking trails.
Nature watching is also part of the picture: observations of the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) have been recorded in La Loge-Aux-Chèvres through 2026. Along with the forests, meadows and ponds, this offers another point of interest for travellers who want to explore the landscape and its wildlife as well as the local history.
