Church art spanning several centuries, a journey into the town’s textile past and a 54-kilometre cycling route: Aix-En-Othe offers a range of ways to shape your stay. There is also a weekly market featuring local produce and a publicly accessible park on a historic site. You can focus on culture, local history, a market visit or cycling.
A church and art spanning several centuries
The Église de la Nativité de la Vierge is also known as Notre Dame de la Nativité and Notre Dame de l'Assomption. It was built in several phases over almost two centuries. Inside, different periods come together: 19th-century wall paintings, a monumental 17th-century altarpiece depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and a painting attributed to the school of Simon Vouet.
The church is open daily, subject to construction work planned over the coming months. Before your visit, check whether the work will affect access.
Textile history and prehistory
The Circuit découverte d'Aix-en-Othe presents the town’s textile industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. Points of interest include former textile factory buildings and the homes of wealthy hosiery manufacturers. Alongside the church’s architectural and artistic history, this offers another historical focus: the town’s textile past.
The Maison de la Préhistoire Othéenne offers another perspective. It was founded to display a remarkable collection of worked and polished flint. The collection is named the “Collection Dijon” after its discoverer. Visits for school classes and groups are available by prior reservation.
Market and park
The Marché d'Aix-en-Othe takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays in and around the Baltard market hall. It is featured as one of France’s 100 outstanding markets and offers local produce. If you plan to visit the market, check the date before travelling.
The Parc des Fontaines is a publicly accessible park on the site of a Gallo-Roman thermal bath complex dating from the 3rd century. Aix-en-Othe thus combines an accessible park with a specific historical connection: the site of the thermal complex is part of the town’s history.
A cycling route with clearly stated details
The Circuits cyclotouristique des vallons d’Aix-en-Othe is 54 kilometres long, has 561 metres of elevation gain and is rated moderate. It starts at the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville and ends back in Aix-en-Othe. Its length, elevation gain and difficulty rating provide useful points of reference if you are considering making cycling a focus of your stay.
Aix-en-Othe brings together a variety of themes that need not be combined into a set itinerary: church art, local textile history, the flint collection, the market and park, and a cycling route with clear figures. You can choose which of these aspects will shape your stay, depending on your interests.
