Rocquigny can be discovered through three distinct highlights: the history of Château Mermoz, the fortified brick architecture of Église Saint-Christophe and a hiking trail with numerous viewpoints. Building history and hiking offer different ways to explore the town. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you would rather focus on history and architecture or on the outdoor route.
Château Mermoz: a residence and family history
At the heart of Rocquigny stands Château Mermoz, a private residence rebuilt in the 18th century. Its history therefore encompasses both its rebuilding and its later connection with Jean Mermoz. In 1934, he bought the estate in Rocquigny so that his mother could live there. The purchase connects the house with a specific family history and explains the Mermoz name’s connection to this place.
The château has been abandoned for many years. Its condition may change as restoration work progresses. If you plan to include the house in your trip, check its current status in advance.
Église Saint-Christophe: brick and fortifications
Église Saint-Christophe de Rocquigny is the only fortified church in the Ardennes Thiérache built entirely of brick. Its distinctive feature is therefore rooted in the region: it is the combination of a fortified church and all-brick construction in the Ardennes Thiérache.
The building’s history adds another dimension to this picture. The older section, including the keep, was fortified in the second half of the 16th century or in the 17th century. The church thus brings together its materials and history of fortification: the all-brick construction on the one hand, and the historically fortified older section on the other.
The church is closed; no key is listed. As access may change, check current access arrangements before visiting.
Hiking trail and viewpoints
The “Escapades sur les Crêtes n°53 – Sur les traces de Jean Mermoz” hiking trail explores Rocquigny. There are numerous viewpoints along the route. Its title also makes a thematic connection with Jean Mermoz, offering an independent way to discover the town.
The highlights are therefore clearly distinct: the route is for travellers who want to discover Rocquigny on a hike, while the château and church represent residential and architectural history. When planning your trip, you can give these themes different weight according to your interests, without treating the hiking route as one of the buildings.
Jean Mermoz in the Ardennes
The Racines de Jean Mermoz association is dedicated to keeping the aviator’s memory alive in the Ardennes. It has a collection of around twenty panels about his life. The Mermoz connection therefore extends beyond the estate in Rocquigny: the association has a regional focus in the Ardennes.
At events in the Ardennes department or neighbouring departments, the association can exhibit its collection of panels, provided the arrangements are made several months in advance. If you are planning an event featuring the collection, allow for this lead time.
