Chatel-Chéhéry offers two distinct points of interest for a stay: the landscape around the Argonne Forest and the history of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Chéhéry. If you would rather spend your time outdoors, you can compare the trails described here and their different routes. If you are interested in architectural history, the former Cistercian abbey offers a focus of its own. This makes it possible to consider nature and culture side by side at the same destination.

Landscape and trails

Chatel-Chéhéry borders the Argonne Forest and overlooks the Aire Valley. A small stream with graceful meanders flows through the valley. The wooded heights and the winding course of the water give the landscape its varied contours; the forest and valley are distinct landmarks that shape the character of the place.

On the section between Harricourt and Apremont-sur-Aire, the GR 14 crosses the wooded heights of Chatel-Chéhéry. By contrast, the circular route “Sur les Traces des Ducs de Joyeuse” runs from Vouziers through Chatel-Chéhéry to Apremont. Comparing the routes can help: the GR 14 section described here names Harricourt and Apremont-sur-Aire, while the circular route also includes Vouziers and Chatel-Chéhéry. This lets you decide which of the two route descriptions better suits your outing, without treating them as a single route.

Another circular trail is the historic “Circuit historique du Sergent Alvin York”. The information panels along the trail are in French, English and German. If you enjoy reading historical information along the way, the languages available may help you decide whether to take this trail.

Abbey history and architecture

The Abbaye Notre-Dame de Chéhéry was founded as a Cistercian abbey in 1147. In the mid-18th century, it was completely rebuilt in the Classical style. Its founding date and rebuilding represent different phases in its history: the year 1147 marks its foundation, while Classicism is the later architectural reference. When placing the abbey in context, you can distinguish between its founding history and the architectural form of the rebuilt structure.

One significant building made of brick and stone remains from the former abbey. It formerly served as a residence for the priors and members of the religious order. The materials and former residential function add concrete details about the surviving building to the abbey’s architectural history. The abbey is therefore not only a story of dates, but also of the building’s former use within the monastic community.

The abbey offers guided tours for groups by arrangement. If you would like to include a tour in your plans, arrange a time in advance.

The Chéri festival at the Abbaye de Chéhéry features performances, concerts, jazz aperitifs and modern balls. The programme ranges from music and performance to social events. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the event dates before making your plans.
