In Sully-sur-Loire, a château on the banks of the Loire, a wooded park and various opportunities for cultural and nature experiences come together. The Château de Sully-sur-Loire was built at the end of the 14th century and was listed as a medieval fortress in 1928. Visitors planning a stay can combine the history of the town with activities on the water, in the landscape and in culture, while taking different activities into account depending on their travel dates.

Château, church and Loire cultural landscape

The Église Saint-Ythier was originally located within the château’s former outer bailey. The church preserves historic organs and furnishings from the 18th century. The Château and the church thus offer two different ways to explore the history of Sully-sur-Loire: a medieval fortress on the one hand, and a church building with its historic furnishings on the other.

The wider regional setting is also noteworthy: the UNESCO-listed Val de Loire cultural landscape begins at Sully-sur-Loire and extends for 280 kilometres to Chalonnes. Its wide extent helps place Sully-sur-Loire within a larger Loire cultural landscape, without requiring a longer route.

Park, ponds and nature area

The Parc du Château is wooded and enclosed by walls. A footbridge over the Sange leads to ponds with numerous birds; the ponds are part of a peripheral area of the Loire Natura 2000 site. Beyond the footbridge, at Espace Georges Blareau, lies a 50-hectare nature area. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus more on the Château and its history or on the parkland and wildlife watching.

Visitors who want to experience the Loire from the water can take canoe, kayak and stand-up paddleboard trips with Sully Canoë Kayak. Routes of 10, 20 or 30 kilometres are available. The different distances give you a concrete guide to the length of trip you want; check water conditions and operating arrangements before setting out.

Choose routes and activities based on date and distance

Two cycling routes with different distances and destinations are described. A 28-kilometre route runs from Gien to Sully-sur-Loire and includes the Château of the Duke of Sully. Another 20-kilometre route runs from Sully-sur-Loire to Châteauneuf-sur-Loire along the north bank, via the Guilly river loop. The length, route and endpoints help you compare them; these are two named routes, not a combined stage assumed here. Route conditions and signage may change.

The puzzle trail Le Château hanté de Sully-sur-Loire – Parcours à pied leads from clue to clue. At each stop, visitors access content on their smartphones; the trail takes about an hour. At the Heures Historiques, the Château and park provide a setting in mid-May for historical costumes, a medieval market and numerous historical performances. If you plan to attend this event, check the dates before your trip.

Carriage rides and horse-riding activities also vary by season and format. Les attelages du Château offers carriage rides in July and August on weekends and public holidays, starting in the Château park. The rides follow wooded park paths along the Sange, pass a replica of the Lourdes Grotto and include a botanical trail. Horseback rides and pony rides are also offered in the park and in the town centre.

Museums, crafts and other experiences

Museum visits include guided and self-guided tours for groups and individual visitors. Check visitor arrangements before your trip. The L’Arcatène Helyett exhibition is housed in Sully-sur-Loire’s former landmark factory and displays Helyett bicycles and motorcycles; here too, check the current opening arrangements.

Flights with Montgolfières du Val de Sully offer a different perspective on the area: they take off near the Château and provide a 360-degree view of the Loire, the Sologne and the Forêt d’Orléans. Those interested in ceramics can book taster and introductory pottery classes by appointment at L’Atelier Boutique de Valérie Rêve. The studio also sells stoneware and porcelain tableware made locally.

The Cinéma SULLY has an auditorium with 200 seats. Its programme includes blockbusters, children’s and youth films, and arthouse films. Check the current arrangements for museum visits and water activities before finalising your trip.
