Discover Combleux through its waterways and the heritage of inland navigation. The Canal d’Orléans flows into the Loire here, making the village a historic port for Loire shipping. The extension of the Canal d’Orléans to the Loire at Combleux was completed in 1691, and the first boat sailed through in 1692. This history provides a thread for your visit, from shipping and engineering structures to waterside paths.
Traces of shipping in the village
The Pont Tournant shows how closely bridge construction was linked to river traffic. Built in 1913, the movable road bridge had a roadway that could rotate around an axis to let boats pass. The furnishings of Saint-Symphorien Church include a votive boat and a stained-glass window depicting Saint Nicholas in the choir. In this way, the technical history of the canal and tangible cultural details in the village stand side by side.
Circular routes with different highlights
The Balade des mariniers is a 4.2 km tourist trail in Combleux. Along the way, 18 information panels share insights into the environment, local wildlife and plant life, and the village’s history. The panels’ content may change over time.
The walk “Le mystère des mariniers de Combleux” starts at the corner of Rue de la Passerelle and Chemin de halage. It is 2 km long and takes about an hour. The “Circuit entre canal et Loire” takes a different approach: its viewpoints are along the riverbank, on the towpaths and in the village lanes; the route also connects the riverside landscape with the canal’s heritage. When comparing the routes, the 2 km walk gives an approximate time, while the 4.2 km Balade is the longer route. The viewpoints shape the character of the Circuit.
